Just a few years ago residents big country were forced to be content with the wallpaper that was offered to them in construction and hardware stores. But time passed, production technologies changed, and modern paper wallpapers replaced ordinary ones. People now have the opportunity to paint their wallpaper in a color that matches their design.

Which ones can be painted?

The production technology of modern wallpaper involves the use of high-quality materials.

But first it should be noted that ordinary paper wallpaper should not be painted.

On simple wallpaper no special relief is applied. Even if paper wallpaper is painted, firstly, from the outside it will not look aesthetically pleasing, and secondly, the paper will swell and fall off after a short time.

There are three types of wallpaper for painting:

  • vinyl;
  • glass wallpaper;
  • non-woven.

Vinyl wallpaper is made from both paper and non-woven fabric. They can be dyed up to ten times. They can be used in any room; for kitchens and children's rooms it is best to choose washable ones with a pattern.

Glass wallpaper is made from natural materials– dolomite, lime and quartz sand. Another component included in the composition is soda. All these components are applied to a paper base. There are two types of glass wallpaper: single-layer and double-layer. They can withstand more than ten stains. Wear-resistant, so they can decorate the room for several years. Wash with a regular brush and water. Most often they are used to cover government and office premises.

Non-woven wallpaper is highly durable. They are based on non-woven fabric - a material made from compressed fibers. Foamed vinyl is applied on top, resulting in various patterns. Non-woven backing lasts for years.

It should be noted that on the market you can also find liquid wallpaper for painting. Liquid wallpaper is a relative novelty among building materials. It is more correct to classify them as decorative plaster. They are found on sale in the form of dry mixtures and diluted concentrates. Liquid wallpaper in dry form must be diluted in water before application. They consist of safe substances - PVA glue, coloring pigment and a base - cellulose flakes. Depending on the colors, silk, dust and glitter can be added to the composition.

Among the advantages liquid wallpaper One can note the fact that they hide wall unevenness, cracks and chips. Mold does not form under them, they are not inhabited by microorganisms. They don't crack or peel off like... roll wallpaper. They do not have connecting seams, they create good thermal insulation. Defective areas can be replaced in a few minutes; there is no need to re-glue the entire room.

Advantages and disadvantages

As noted earlier, liquid wallpaper does not peel off after painting. The thing is that a diluted solution is applied to the wall, and the design can be made with your own hands. A layer of liquid wallpaper promotes noise reduction, which means that extraneous noise from the entrance or street will not enter the room. The ease of applying liquid wallpaper allows any adult to make repairs; this does not require special skills or knowledge.

Liquid wallpaper has its drawbacks - it can fade under the influence of sunlight, cotton absorbs odors, so in the kitchen you should not decorate the walls with this building material.

The advantages of vinyl, non-woven and glass wallpaper were partially described in the previous section, but the only disadvantages can be noted are their high cost. Unfortunately, even cosmetic repairs cost a pretty penny.

When is the best time to paint?

After gluing the wallpaper, plasterers advise waiting about two days, during which time the wallpaper glue will dry completely and the wallpaper will stick tightly. If you apply paint on the same day after wallpapering, there is a high probability of marks and stains appearing.

You should be careful when buying non-woven wallpaper, some of them are not intended for painting.

How to choose paint?

TO good wallpaper It is necessary to select high-quality paints. You should not save money, as questionable products can negatively affect your health. If there are allergy sufferers or small children in the family, it is advisable that they are not in the room at the time of repair.

Today the most commonly used paints are:

  • alkyd;
  • acrylic;
  • water-dispersed.

Alkyd paints are purchased for utility rooms - basements, storage rooms. These paints can be harmful to human and animal health. The oils and resins included in their composition can disable even an adult healthy man. But they have a number of advantages. They have high saturation, are indifferent to humidity, and do not deteriorate under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

The antifungal components they contain prevent mold from growing on the wallpaper.

Their service life is only five years, they are highly flammable, so it is not advisable to apply them near an open fire. The cost of acrylic paints is very low.

Water-dispersion paints contain no harmful substances, so they are also suitable for city apartments. A huge selection of colors will allow you to choose the color to suit any interior.

Latex paint on water dispersion acrylic base mostly non-woven fabrics are painted embossed wallpaper and glass wallpaper. It dries in a few hours and has no specific odors. It is recommended for painting bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms, but it cannot be used in the bathroom.

Water-based latex paint will last for many years. Its elasticity is achieved through specially developed substances. In the store it is found in the universal white color; other colors are obtained by diluting it immediately before application.

Acrylic paints are suitable for city apartments, country houses and office space. Such paints are even purchased for kindergartens. They contain no harmful substances chemical substances, but the price of acrylic paints is correspondingly high.

Water-based acrylic paint is intended for non-woven wallpaper. It stands out among its competitors with its rich colors that do not fade over years of use. It can be applied to both paper wallpaper and glass wallpaper.

Acrylic paints are odorless and do not cover the wallpaper with a film, so they “breathe”. And they dry in just one day.

Water-based paint does not contain harmful chemical components, therefore it is used in residential premises for commercial and domestic purposes. Wallpaper after painting is moisture resistant, can be washed, and does not emit any odor. Water-based paint can be used to paint kitchens, bathrooms and swimming pools due to its silicone base.

As for liquid wallpaper, their mixtures have certain dyes in advance. Some experts recommend painting the wall before applying liquid wallpaper. Oil paint is used for this. In this case, spots do not appear, the saturation of shades increases, and the surface is leveled. To make a textured wall stand out from the main background, there is a design solution: before applying liquid wallpaper, paint the walls in bright, exotic colors.

Remember that in cases where the walls in the room are already painted, for example, magnetic paint was used, before the next step - wallpapering, you need to “highlight” this place. Otherwise, unpleasant stains will appear under the wallpaper. In order for the magnetization effect to be maintained, the paint must be applied about five times, and the wallpaper should not be very thick. The next layer of paint is applied only after the previous one has dried. Therefore, liquid wallpaper is best suited for magnetic paint.

Now let's talk a little about the features of paints. If the paint has no gloss, it is matte. It is best applied in larger areas. Semi-matte paint looks great in bedrooms, and glossy paint - in rooms where sunlight will complement the interior.

Semi-gloss paint cleans well, it is more appropriate to apply it to kitchen walls, however, like satin paint, it is also moisture resistant.

Using water-based varnish, you can increase the mechanical strength of the wallpaper and its water resistance. But it is worth considering the disadvantages of this event. The shine will “reveal” all the irregularities, the process itself is labor-intensive, you need to be patient. The varnish helps to change the basic shade, but at the same time such wallpaper is easy to clean.

Consumption

Paint consumption will depend primarily on the types of wallpaper, and secondly on the types of paint itself. Paper wallpaper, unlike glass wallpaper, absorbs more moisture, which means you will need much more paint. On average, a liter of acrylic paint is enough for 5 square meters. m. But if you apply paint in several layers, this will lead to increased consumption.

Before you go on construction market, it is necessary to take measurements. Balcony blocks and doorways do not need to be taken into account. If there is furniture installed in the room, for example, a wall or a wardrobe, which is not planned to be rearranged, then the wall behind this furniture does not need to be painted - this will significantly save money.

Tools and materials

To apply paint to wallpaper, it is best to use a roller; this will save time on work and reduce paint consumption. There are several types of rollers; fur and foam rollers are suitable for painting directly. Velor and polyacrylic rollers are used for other tasks.

Masking tape will be needed to apply various stripes and patterns, thanks to it there will be no gaps and the pattern will be even. By the way, you need to remove it very carefully so as not to tear it off along with the paint.

A roller is not suitable for painting small parts, so it is best to use a brush. Brushes, like rollers, must be thoroughly wrung out before application to avoid uneven layers.

You will have to dilute the paint in an unnecessary container - an old plastic bucket or a large mayonnaise container. After all, after completing all the work, this container will need to be thrown away; unfortunately, it is almost impossible to wash it.

A plastic bath is a specially designed device for painting walls. A small amount of paint is poured into the niche, and the top of the tray allows you to squeeze out the excess.

For some cases, varnish and color may be needed. Varnish has already been written about earlier, and with the help of tint you can create different color schemes. The color is most suitable for non-woven wallpaper. By adding a color scheme with the desired color to white paint, you can change the interior beyond recognition.

Using a stencil, you can apply special designs, patterns and inscriptions to the wallpaper. “Paintings” are obtained at a highly artistic level even by a person who does not have vocational education in this domain.

It is more advisable to use a spray gun for painting large rooms, this saves both consumption and time spent on work.

With this tool it is easier to make the surface uniform.

Technology

First of all, it is advisable to prime the walls, and only then glue the wallpaper. Primed walls will allow the wallpaper to stick for a long time, and in addition, the primer will also level the walls. An acrylic or PVA glue-based primer is most suitable for residential premises.

When all the tools are prepared and the wallpaper has already been pasted, the next stage of repair awaits - painting it.

Preparing wallpaper for painting includes the following steps:

  • Removing dust from the surface. A vacuum cleaner or a dry cotton rag or napkin is best suited for this.
  • Removing glue residues. The glue can especially appear at the joints.

It is advisable to lay cellophane or plastic film on the floor. If you use old newspapers, they can absorb excess paint, and the laminate or linoleum will be stained.

All furniture, Appliances and electronics must be removed from the room. Radiators, ventilation grilles and window sills must be protected from paint. The baseboards are also covered with masking tape.

Proper painting of old and “freshly pasted” wallpaper on the wall with a roller with your own hands begins with choosing a tool. It should be remembered that using a long-nap roller will achieve the best painting effect. This roller reaches even the most inaccessible places of the decorative layer.

Foam rollers can be used to remove excess paint from the “tops” of the layer. They are not suitable for painting directly; they will leave behind bubbles. A velor roller can be used for the same purposes.

It is more advisable to carry out a test before the main painting. For this purpose, less noticeable sections of the wall are selected. In this way, you can practice application technique, strength and uniformity.

Water-dispersion paint is diluted with a small amount of water, which makes it thinner. This type of paint is easiest to apply to wallpaper; consumption is also reduced.

First, all corners and joints between the walls and the ceiling or floor are passed with a brush, and then the remaining part is painted with a roller without rest. There is no need to press the roller hard; movements should be light and fast. The first layer must be completed before the paint is completely dry, otherwise transitions and joints will be visible to the eye.

Two layers of paint should be applied to textured wallpaper. The second layer should be undiluted. The texture helps hide uneven walls and poor-quality painting, so it should not be disturbed. No rubbing, just light application of paint to the wallpaper.

If you work together, you need to start from the corners. Use a brush at the locations of sockets and switches. Remember that if you apply paint to an already painted part, a double layer will form, and in the future these will be stains.

The roller needs to be periodically updated: either take out the unused one, or remove excess lint from the old one. To do this, soapy water is used, the result is fixed in clean water.

The roller is evenly wetted during chaotic movements along the mesh of the plastic tray; excess paint remains in the tray and not on the wall. You need to roll until the roller is completely saturated. If this is not done, unpainted parts will form on the wall. This procedure must be repeated constantly when adding new paint, after some time the process will be established and there will be no more problems with this.

Painters came up with a special technique for applying paint - W-shaped. A letter is drawn, and then it is painted over, and so you need to continue from one corner to the other. The main thing is to apply without streaks. But for simplicity, it is enough to apply the paint with a roller from the ceiling to the floor.

If you increase the humidity in the room, the drying process of the paint can be slowed down. Thanks to this, painting can be done in more time.

In many cases, tinting is required. By adding the desired tube of color to the white paint, we achieve different color solutions. Do not neglect the instructions. If you overdo it, you can completely ruin the shade or complicate the process of repetition.

By the way, the necessary shades can be ordered in specialized stores. Thus, a can of new paint will always match the previous one, since the paint is diluted using special factory technologies, and not “by eye.”

Non-woven wallpaper with a complex texture can be painted from the inside, allowing the rolls to soak in the paint. The drawing itself will not be painted and will remain in its original color. In the future, you can paint it with a brush in any color. Conversely, you can paint the relief pattern directly using an ordinary kitchen sponge. Light pressure achieves this effect.

Painting wallpaper pasted on the ceiling is carried out using a stepladder and a roller with a large handle. By the way, you can use a spray bottle for ceiling work. Ceiling glass wallpaper is the easiest to paint. All work begins from the corners, and then the remaining surface is painted with a roller. It is better to apply paint in two layers, in the first case – parallel to the window, in the second – across.

Although liquid wallpaper can be “refreshed” using a can of paint, after that the wall will become smooth. Its texture will be lost. It will no longer be possible to partially remove the material from the wall; only final dismantling is possible.

Paint in two colors

Not many people decide to paint their bedroom or living room in combination. Some are accustomed to universal colors, others are afraid of ruining the interior with their own hands. Moreover, no one will return money for mistakes made.

But at the same time many design solutions provide a combination of different colors in the room. This can be achieved either by pasting different wallpapers, or by painting them in different color shades.

Remember that today special combination methods have been developed.

You can combine:

  • colors similar in color;
  • making gradient transitions;
  • experimenting with different palettes.

Special design solutions have been invented to hide transitions. One of them is molding. Moldings are made from safe polymers and are easily attached not only to the ceiling, but also to the walls. It is more advisable to use wooden or plaster molding in rooms where wooden furniture predominates - these could be bedrooms or offices. Polyurethane moldings are moisture resistant and should be installed in kitchens or bathrooms. All moldings are attached to the walls using special glue.

Borders, planks and slats are popular in the design environment - they can be made from both natural and artificial materials. The choice is determined only by the design of the room and financial situation customer.

But most often for ordinary apartments, masking tape is used. It is easily glued and easily dismantled after painting. Masking tape costs little money, is very durable, and can be used in a wide range of temperatures from scorching heat to bitter cold.

Let us dwell in more detail on the combined methods of painting wallpaper:

  • The most challenging is the method called "accent wall". With this method, not half the wall is painted one color, but the other half is painted another. Here we're talking about about painting three walls one color and the fourth another. Or this method is used for ornamentally highlighting protrusions - fireplaces, chimneys and stoves.
  • Horizontal division most often found in city apartments, especially in cases where Bottom part the walls are stucco. The division can be either central or with a significant advantage. It is customary to decorate the transition with molding.

If the molding is not included in the design, then the transition should be made using masking tape, but it should be removed within an hour after painting.

  • In children's rooms or in rooms intended for children, they are often made inserts of geometric shapes. First, the entire wall is painted with the selected color and the shapes are marked using masking tape. The second layer, which will differ in color, is applied after the first has completely dried.

  • Popular several decades ago gradient coloring method walls Today, the fashion for gradient has returned. You can paint each wall a different color or transition from dark to light. In the second case, the wall is first painted one color, and then part of it is shaded.
  • Stripes, diamonds and polka dots They are used less often; you can use masking tape or a stencil to apply them.

How long can you repaint?

Unfortunately, it often happens that after wallpapering a room, it needs to be repainted in a different color. Let's say you didn't like the color or the interior changed. Or maybe, after a certain time, the previous color simply begins to get boring. A reasonable question arises whether it is possible to repaint the wallpaper and how many times it can be repainted.

First, I would like to point out that repainting is a popular trend today.

Gone are the days when cosmetic renovations meant having to re-glue the wallpaper. The furniture had to be taken out, the old wallpaper had to be torn off, and new wallpaper had to be put up. This took a lot of time and effort.

Today you can only repaint a certain section of the wall in the color you like, and that’s it – the repair is completed.

Manufacturers have taken care of their customers and produce textured wallpaper, the protrusion of which is sufficient to carry out painting work at least five times. Until the drawing is flush with the paint. Usually the quantity is indicated on the packaging; there are specimens intended for re-dying more than ten times.

But in this case you won’t be able to save money.

Remember that the most ordinary paper wallpapers swell and roll off after the second painting.

It is also important what kind of glue they were used to attach to the wall. If cheap glue was used, then after the wallpaper “gains weight”, it will slide off the wall under its own weight.

It should be borne in mind that matte paints clog up the design, unlike glossy ones, which, on the contrary, emphasize it. It is advisable to use water-based paint; it does not create crusts.

When repainting, you can experiment with the color scheme, for example, a combination of dark blue colors with white paint - you get a pastel color. And when mixing yellow and blue paint it turns out green tint. If you mix yellow and red it becomes orange.

Bright or colorful combinations are obtained by mixing green and red colors with white paint. You can experiment with your children, the main thing is just not to forget what was mixed with what, in order to repeat this color in the future.

Interior design options

Any city apartment begins with a corridor. Even if guests come very rarely, the postman, the person who checks the meter readings, or the social worker rings the doorbell at least once a month. Therefore, the hallway should create coziness, and wallpaper plays a very important role in this.

From a design point of view in the corridor It is best to use light-colored paint; the room will not look like a closet. Wall lights and a glossy floor will complement the composition.

The second most important, and therefore no less important, is in the apartment living room. This is where guests and household members spend most of their time. They rest, have tea and spend the night. Therefore, this room needs a combination of warm, soothing colors. If the living room is dominated by White color– furniture, household appliances and electronics, then it is more advisable to paint the wallpaper in light shades.

In studio apartments experts advise maintaining a unified design of the kitchen and living room. This combination visually expands the room.

  • Concerning kitchens, then it is best to put washable wallpaper in this room. Even after heavy contamination with droplets of fat or smoke, they are very easy to return to their original form. And the paint should be used that does not absorb excess odors.
  • Bedroom- This is a secluded room, people visit it mainly only at night. If a married couple likes to sleep until lunch, it is best to give preference to dark shades. And if you get up before dawn, it’s bright. Well known fact: dark colors without gloss they absorb light.

  • Original children's room stands out from the background of the entire apartment. There is no shame in showing such a room to both family and strangers. Children in such a room will always find something to occupy themselves during the daytime and will fall asleep peacefully in the evening. Decorative painting brings a certain charm to the apartment. With its help, you can emphasize the design features and hide defects and unevenness of the walls.
  • In the old days, about hanging wallpaper In bathroom, one could not even dream. The wallpaper itself did not hold up in this humid room, let alone paint it. They turned yellow and fell off after a short time, but, worst of all, fungus could form under them. And it is very difficult to get it out.

In today's age high technology Manufacturers sell high-quality wallpaper and special paints for rooms with high humidity. Out of habit, you can paint your bathroom Blue colour, or you can go for an experiment and paint using a combined method.

  • IN country house, especially on the upper floors, you can glue wallpaper, including on the ceiling. Such a transition visually raises the height of the room, hides uneven joints and plays up unsightly corners.
  • In offices or municipal institutions By using paintable wallpaper, you can significantly save on subsequent repairs.

The times when you had to re-stick wallpaper every two years have sunk into oblivion. Today, it is enough to glue wallpaper once for painting, and you can change its color as many times as you like. At least five, at least ten. The main thing is to remember that for this you need to buy high-quality building materials.

To learn how to properly paint wallpaper, watch the following video.

No matter how high-quality the chosen and pasted wallpaper is, sooner or later its color may fade, and the design may simply become boring. At this point the question arises: is it possible to paint ordinary wallpaper with paint? The answer depends solely on the type of specific roll materials.

It is advisable to paint only those coatings that are not damaged and adhere tightly to the wall surface.

An important point when painting wallpaper is the choice of appropriate paint. Let us consider in more detail the types of coloring compositions suitable for application to roll materials.

There is a fairly wide range of paints on the building materials market, which differ in composition and scope of application. When choosing a suitable paint, pay attention to its properties.

  • Environmentally friendly – harmless to humans and animals due to the absence of toxic elements.
  • Resistance to mechanical stress– resistance of the applied composition to cracks and shedding during impacts and cleaning.
  • Light resistance– long-term color retention when exposed to sunlight.
  • Moisture resistance – resistance to the destructive effects of liquids, the ability to wash painted surfaces.
  • Drying time.

Alkyd paint forms a protective film on the surface of the wallpaper, which allows you to wash the materials with various means without damaging their structure. This film does not allow the wallpaper to “breathe” and smoothes out its texture, so the coloring composition can only be applied to smooth canvases. These paints contain antifungal additives. Their average service life is five years; they are best suited for glass wallpaper.

Alkyd paints contain toxic oils and resins, so it is better to use them in non-residential areas. In addition, such paints are fire hazardous.

Water-dispersion compositions include water-based paint. The distinctive qualities of this paint are environmentally friendly, odorless, and quick drying. The protective film of water-based paint is resistant to mechanical stress and protects the wallpaper from damage. It allows air to pass through, which prevents the formation of fungus and mold under the wallpaper.

Water-based compositions can be used to paint rooms with high humidity, since the paint has high moisture resistance.

Water-based paints, depending on the composition, are divided into the following types.

  1. Latex – strengthens the surface of the wallpaper, which prevents it from peeling off and getting wet during painting. They extend the service life of rolled materials and allow them to be cleaned with detergents. Any type of canvas can be painted with latex compounds.
  2. Acrylic latex based– the most numerous group of water-based compositions. Such paints protect the surface of the wallpaper from corrosion and convey the relief and texture of materials well. Apply them in several layers, this will ensure a high-quality and elastic coating.
  3. Acrylic water based– characterized by the absence of an unpleasant odor and quick drying. They allow the materials under the wallpaper to “breathe”, which prevents the formation of steam in the room. Suitable for non-woven wallpaper.
  4. Water-based– most economical option among all coloring compositions. They are afraid of moisture and have a poor choice of colors. You can paint paper canvases with them only after pre-treating the walls with a PVA base. They are most successfully combined with vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis.

An important quality of any paint is its gloss level. This indicator not only affects appearance rooms, but also characterizes the water-repellent properties of painted wallpaper.

The lower the gloss level of the protective paint film, the faster moisture will be absorbed into the roll materials.

According to the degree of gloss, paints are divided into the following types.

  1. Glossy - emphasizes the imperfections of the walls, so it is rarely used for residential premises. Suitable for dark rooms.
  2. Semi-gloss – has good reflective ability. It can be used in children's rooms and kitchens.
  3. Matte – due to the lack of shine, it masks surface defects and is used in large rooms.
  4. Semi-matte - a slight gloss smoothes out minor unevenness in the walls. Fits organically into the sleeping area.
  5. Satin - smooth structure, increased wear resistance and durability allow you to use this paint in any room.

Wallpaper painting technology

Each type of wallpaper implies certain preparatory work before painting. For example, wallpaper made of foamed vinyl on a non-woven base requires two layers of preliminary primer. Before treating the wall, wash it work surface with help detergent for dishes to degrease them. It is not recommended to choose oil-based compounds for painting such wallpaper; they will flow down the vinyl. Use water-based or special acrylic paints.

Advice

To obtain a uniform color of non-woven fabric, paint it from the outside. If the pattern is sufficiently embossed, then you can paint the wallpaper with a more saturated color on the reverse side. In this case, the canvas will absorb the paint, the background of the wallpaper will acquire the desired color, and the pattern will remain the same shade.

Paper-based vinyl roll materials are not suitable for painting. Deep penetrating paints used to paint wallpaper will allow the paper backing of the wallpaper to become wet and peel off from both the wall and the vinyl top covering. Vinyl sheets on a non-woven backing will be difficult to paint.

Paper canvases can be painted with any coloring composition. However, priming the walls in this case will not be enough; use special water-repellent agents. The best choice would be latex paints.

An important factor that influences the quality of painting is the tools. Choose a wool or mohair paint roller. Foam rubber can slip over the surface of the wallpaper and leave a shiny mark after drying. Wool or mohair will allow you to paint the walls evenly, regardless of the texture of the canvas.

  1. Take out the furniture and cover the floor with newspapers or protective film.
  2. Clean the surface of the walls from dust, dirt, cobwebs using a vacuum cleaner or sponge. Glue the old roll materials in the right places.
  3. Seal baseboards, switches, and sockets with masking tape.
  4. Apply a water-repellent agent to paper wallpaper or paper-based coatings with a roller; use a brush in hard-to-reach places. Wait for the composition to dry completely (preferably at least 24 hours).
  5. Dilute the paint with water, stir until smooth, if required according to the instructions on the package.
  6. Apply the paint composition evenly, in a thin layer, using a roller and brush, starting from the ceiling, so that drops of paint do not spoil the already painted part of the wall. Paint the hay in sections. To avoid spots and streaks, apply quickly, before the painted surface has time to dry.
  7. When the composition is completely dry, apply a second coat of paint (preferably after at least 2-4 hours).

The advisability of painting faded wallpaper should be judged based on its type and condition. Non-woven materials will safely withstand 5-10 stains, while paper-based canvases may not withstand even one, and foamed vinyl will actively resist painting. It is still possible to paint old rolled materials. Be responsible when choosing tools, buy high-quality paint, don’t forget about primer and water-repellent agents, and everything will certainly work out.

Despite the quality and beautiful drawing, sooner or later the wallpaper loses its color, and the design becomes boring. Depending on the type and characteristics of the rolled wallpaper, they can be painted with any paint color you like. The main thing is that the coloring composition is fully consistent with the upcoming work.

Type of wallpaper

Before you start painting old wallpaper, you need to determine its type:

  1. Simple paper ones. They require pre-treatment with a water-repellent mixture, and only after that it is allowed to paint with a small amount of paint, otherwise the wallpaper will rise.
  2. Waterproof and dense. Painting is allowed immediately.
  3. Vinyl, non-woven, fiberglass. They do not require preliminary priming and can be painted immediately.

Which paint is better to use?

If you decide to paint paper-type non-woven wallpaper with a convex figured pattern, you should choose a water-based dye that contains binding components (organic and inorganic). Widely used paints are acrylic, which have a number of positive properties: indelible quality of the surface layer, water resistance, and a wide choice of colors. If you need to select a material budget option, it is permissible to use a PVA-based emulsion composition. It is worth considering that a cheap dye does not match the quality, it accumulates steam, and the palette of shades is minimal.

Tips: A latex suspension containing binding components adheres well to figured wallpaper. With this composition you can safely paint paper or duplex wallpaper. After its application, the canvas acquires gloss, does not fade in the sun, but, compared to acrylic, wears off faster.

The best option for painting paper wallpaper is a water-dispersion paint. This kind of mixture is suitable for painting children's rooms, as it does not contain harmful components and is an environmentally friendly product. This dye dries within an hour. During the painting process, water-dispersion paint does not emit a toxic odor.

Selecting waterborne paint

Water-dispersible coloring matter comes in different forms. There are three main types: latex, adhesive and acrylic.

Choosing a paint decor

Before repair work, you should think about a variety of shades and patterns. Among the painting options you can consider:

  • color combination;
  • mixing colors;
  • stencil design or pattern.

Creative ideas will help you create an unusual, unique and original interior Houses. It is convenient to use tape to separate strips of wallpaper before painting.

Painting process

Before starting renovations, you should remove furniture and rugs from the room so as not to stain them with paint, which will be problematic to get rid of. You should isolate the sockets in the room using a vacuum cleaner from the surface relief pattern Remove dust particles from the wallpaper. If there are peeled corners of the wallpaper, they need to be glued or cut off. Next we prime the surface - important factor, allowing you to protect the canvas from penetration of paint into the structure.

Tip: A primer will add strength to the wallpaper and reduce wear and tear.

After the primer has completely dried, you can begin to paint the walls. To apply the paint evenly, you need to prepare a paint roller with soft bristles. Use a plastic tray for paint. A bucket or basin will not work, as after taking the paint with a roller, streaks will remain on the wall

Use a wide brush to paint corner walls. To get a rich color or combined shades, you need to add a couple of drops of color to the overall composition of the emulsion. Strokes on the wall can be applied in any direction, the main thing is that the layer is proper, without gaps or differences in shades. We apply it with a roller or a wide brush from left to right, moving from the ceiling to the floor. Each subsequent stroke should extend a few centimeters beyond the previous one.

As the paint applied to the roller smears, you should go over the previous area to remove excess drips. Applying one coat of paint to the wall is unlikely to be enough: after the first application, you need to wait a while and repeat the painting procedure.

The painting must be uniform so that the old color does not show through the new layer, otherwise the appearance of the wall will be ruined. Dilute the coloring composition with water, if the instructions require it, mix until smooth.

Tip: The emulsion should be applied perpendicular to the previous strokes.

To avoid stains of different colors, the paint should be quickly and evenly distributed over the area. It is better to paint the walls in parts so that it does not dry out and the transitions are visible. Re-staining is possible after 2-4 hours.

You can check the surface to be painted for gaps using a directed light source (lamp) on the wall. The paint dries within 24 hours, but this depends on the air temperature and humidity in the room.

In order to cover the non-woven wallpaper evenly with the dye, painting should begin from the outside. If there is a relief pattern, apply several layers of paint on the reverse side to obtain a more saturated color. When applied in this way, the canvas will become saturated and the background will acquire the required shade. Thin ones are not suitable for painting vinyl wallpapers. If they are non-woven, it will be difficult to paint them.

Paper canvases are suitable for painting with any composition. In this case, priming the surface will not be sufficient; it will need to be pre-treated with water-repellent agents.

Tip: The paint base used for paper wallpaper must be water-repellent.

If the walls in the room are covered with ordinary wallpaper, which wrinkles after applying a primer, it is better to abandon the process of painting the wallpaper. If painting is being done for the first time, in order not to waste paint and spoil the paper coating, it is better to invite a painter.

Any paint released for sale is accompanied by instructions to guide you in the dilution process for painting paper-based wallpaper. Non-woven fabrics can withstand up to 10 stains. Paper-type material can become deformed even after the first repainting. Wallpaper on foam vinyl will not take on the coloring compound due to the repulsive reaction of the material. As a result, it turns out that old paper-type roll wallpaper can be painted; the main thing is to purchase a high-quality paint composition, a terry roller, a primer and a water-repellent agent, and everything will certainly work out.

Water-based paint has many advantages: low cost, ease of use, environmental safety and the ability to do it yourself. Hence its widespread use in home repairs.

We minimize labor costs

Let's say you want to paint the wall instead of using wallpaper for the sake of variety. Many people are deterred from such experiments by the need to tear off old wallpaper, which can sit quite well. Is it possible to paint wallpaper? water-based paint, thereby saving your own energy?

Just one of the advantages of water-based paint is that it can be used directly on wallpaper. The paper is well saturated with water, which ensures reliable adhesion of the paint to the surface and a high-quality result.

This, by the way, allows you to not really worry about whether the paint will fit well on the surface of the wall - it will fit perfectly on paper.

Restrictions

Of course, there are some subtleties, and they relate not only to how to properly paint wallpaper with water-based paint, but also to the condition of the wallpaper itself:

  1. The wallpaper should sit securely. If they fall off, then nothing will stop them from falling off along with the paint.
  2. The presence of wallpaper does not deprive you of the opportunity to eliminate identified defects using a primer or even plaster.
  3. On old wallpaper you will have to apply more layers of paint (not 2, as on average, but 3 or 4). Water-based paint conveys the surface texture well, so defects and abrasions in the wallpaper can show through the coating. Extra layers will help avoid this.
  4. Wallpaper must be completely cleaned of any dirt.

Operating procedure

Let's figure out how to properly paint wallpaper with water-based paint:

  • Preparing the premises. Remove everything unnecessary, cover the floor with film or newspapers and open the windows.
  • Surface cleaning is one of the most important stages. Any interference between the ink and paper will impair adhesion and result in an uneven and unreliable finish. In this case, cleaning must be carried out using “dry” methods, otherwise the wallpaper can become unusable and you will have to tear it off.
  • Paint preparation is carried out in the same way as when working on other surfaces. Paper absorbs water-based compositions well, so the paint for the first layer can be made a little more liquid than usual. Thanks to this, the first layer will be reliably absorbed, and subsequent ones will be easier to apply.

  • It is advisable to start painting from the top corner (the least convenient). The paint should be applied in a top-to-bottom motion, regardless of whether you use a roller or a brush. This will allow you to better manage smudges.
  • It is most convenient to apply the paint in parallel stripes with some overlap.
  • After completing the first coat, let the paint dry, and apply the second in the same way, only in a different direction (either from bottom to top, or to the side). This time, it’s worth making the paint a little thicker to reduce its spread and the likelihood of streaks.

Having figured out how to paint wallpaper with water-based paint, you can change the appearance of the room beyond recognition without any extra work.

If you need to choose a budget option material, it is permissible to take a PVA-based emulsion composition.

The best option for painting paper wallpaper is water-dispersion paint.

Before repair work, you should think about the variety of shades and patterns. Among the painting options you can consider:

  • color combination;
  • mixing colors;
  • stencil design or pattern.

Creative ideas will help you create an unusual, unique and original home interior. It is convenient to use tape to separate strips of wallpaper before painting.

Painting process

Before starting renovations, you should remove furniture and rugs from the room so as not to stain them with paint, which will be problematic to get rid of. You should insulate the sockets in the room, and use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust particles from the surface of the relief pattern on the wallpaper. If there are peeled corners of the wallpaper, they need to be glued or cut off. Next, we prime the surface - an important factor in protecting the canvas from paint penetration into the structure.

Thin vinyl wallpaper is not suitable for painting.

Materials and tools for work

In order for the work to be completed efficiently and with the desired result, it is necessary to prepare everything in advance, according to the following list:

      1. Paint rollers of various widths and structures. Painting a surface with rollers is much faster than with brushes. Wool or mohair are best. A foam roller is not advisable, as it can slip across the surface of the wallpaper and leave behind a shiny mark when the paint dries. Before starting painting work, rollers with pile must be soaked in cold water so that the villi become soft and even out. Before using the roller, squeeze it well and dry it.
      2. Paint brushes (wide, medium and narrow). Where it is not possible to use a roller, brushes are used. The length of the hairs of the brushes, as well as the length of the pile of the rollers, must be chosen taking into account the depth of the relief decorative covering wallpaper The deeper the relief of the wallpaper surface, the longer the pile and hairs of the prepared tools should be.
      3. Vacuum cleaner, brushes, sponge. All this will be needed when preparing the wallpaper surface for painting.
      4. Paint mixing tool. Construction mixer, drill with special nozzle or you can just use a smooth strip, etc.
      5. A container for mixing paint and a paint tray for paint. If there is no painting bath, then it can be replaced with any other suitable container. Place a metal mesh or a piece of steel plate, or plywood, in this container, with holes made in it in a checkerboard pattern (you will get a mesh with a cell diameter of 12 mm and a distance between them of 25 mm). After the roller is dipped into the paint, it must be rolled over this grid several times to remove excess paint.

      6. Masking tape. It will be needed to protect baseboards, electrical outlets and switches, etc. from unintentional staining.
      7. Plastic film or thick paper. It will be needed to cover areas of the floor and other coverings that need to be protected from paint getting on them.
      8. Ladder. For painting wallpaper on the ceiling, if there is any, and on the top of the walls.
      9. Water-repellent coating. It is necessary to protect the paper structure of the wallpaper from getting wet, and as a consequence of this, possible damage and separation from the wall surface.
      10. Dye.
      11. If necessary, color for paint. Color is necessary if you want to give the paint a certain shade color range. You can choose shades yourself, or you can select them in a store with the help of a specialist with a special device.
      12. Small volume container (about 100 ml) for preparing a test color composition from paint and color.

Choosing paint for paper wallpaper

When choosing paint, consider the following:

  1. The paint can have different light properties (matte, satin, glossy and mixed properties). It is necessary to choose paint taking into account the type of wallpaper surface, lighting and purpose of the room. To do this, you need to remember that glossy paint will highlight the existing imperfections of the walls, and they will become more noticeable. Therefore glossy paint will do for rooms with darkened, dim lighting. Semi-gloss paint – has good reflective ability. Matte paint – masks surface defects, as it has no shine and can be used in large rooms. Semi-matte paint – has a slight gloss and blurs small unevenness in the walls; it fits well into the sleeping area. Satin paint – has a smooth structure, increased wear resistance and durability. Satin paint can be used in any room, depending on its purpose and lighting.
  2. Will this paint give the painted surface such properties as moisture resistance (the ability to wash wallpaper), resistance to artificial lighting or direct sunlight, protection from mechanical influences and other necessary properties.
  3. The time required for one coat of paint to dry completely.
  4. Transparency (covering power). If the wallpaper is bright in color (or is already painted with bright paint), then you need to know whether the new paint will completely cover this color or whether the old shade will show through it.
  5. What is the paint base? There are alkyd, water-based or latex and acrylic paints. For paper wallpaper, paint on any base is suitable. Alkyd paint creates a protective film on the surface to be painted. This film imparts moisture resistance and resistance to mechanical stress. However, if the surface of the wallpaper is not smooth, but embossed, then this film will cover the relief and it will smooth out, which will not allow the wallpaper to “breathe”. Alkyd-based paint is not environmentally friendly. Alkyd paints contain toxic oils and resins, so it is better to choose this paint for non-residential premises. For residential premises, paints with a water-dispersion composition are best suited (water-based paint and its more resistant variety - acrylic). These water-based paints are odorless, quick-drying and environmentally friendly. Besides acrylic paint creates a protective layer on the painted surface that is well resistant to moisture, direct sunlight, temperature changes and mechanical stress.

Preparing to paint wallpaper

Before painting walls with paper wallpaper, you need to prepare the surfaces and perform other necessary steps:

  1. Remove all objects and furniture that will interfere with work. Cover the floor and those coverings that should not be exposed to paint with plastic wrap or other material prepared for this purpose. Secure the film with masking tape.
  2. Cover baseboards, electrical sockets, switches and other necessary objects, devices and connectors with masking tape.
  3. Clean the surface of the wallpaper from dust, cobwebs and other contaminants. To do this, use a vacuum cleaner, dry brushes and a sponge.
  4. Close all windows and vents in the room, turn off air conditioners and ventilation. Avoid drafts and temperature changes. Moistened wallpaper may separate from the wall surface or air bubbles may form underneath it.
  5. Apply a water-repellent coating to the surface of the wallpaper. Use paint rollers and brushes for this. In hard-to-reach places, use narrow paint rollers for corners and joints, as well as paint brushes.
  6. Dry the wallpaper until completely dry (the drying time should be indicated in the instructions for using the water-repellent coating). It is better to let it sit for at least 24 hours before painting, after applying the water-repellent composition.
  7. After the wallpaper is completely prepared for painting, start preparing the paint itself. Pour the paint into the prepared container. Stir the paint using the tool prepared for this until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
  8. Tint the paint.

Paint tinting

You can do the paint tinting yourself. To do this, first mix the color and paint in a small container (about 100 ml) until the color is uniform. Add color little by little (literally, drop by drop, you can use a medical syringe) until you get the desired shade. Write down the number of drops. Apply test paint to the area of the wall that you determine is suitable for these purposes. Try it on an area of wallpaper where there is the main lighting for this room (artificial or natural). After the paint has dried, evaluate the result. When tinting the base paint composition, keep in mind that its color on the wall surface will be brighter than in the container. Use your notes to calculate the amount of color. If to prepare a test composition you added 10 drops of color per 100 ml of paint, then for the main color composition for the entire wall you need to reduce this amount by 20%. That is, for 1000 ml of paint there are not 100 drops of color, but only 80.

Now everything is ready and you can start painting the wallpaper.

Wallpaper painting

Painting wallpaper as the final stage must be done with special responsibility and care. To achieve the best result, you must adhere to the following tips and procedures:

  1. Start painting the wallpaper from those areas that will be behind the furniture or other furnishings. In this way, you will get the hang of it and once again make sure that the chosen shade of color is correct and the paint has been successfully tinted.
  2. Pre-paint with brushes areas where it is impossible to apply paint with a roller. Using paint brushes, blend the paint well until the desired layer and shade is formed. After that, start applying paint with a roller.
  3. It is better to paint wallpaper from top to bottom or from ceiling to floor. Otherwise, the paint may flow onto an already painted surface, thereby ruining the result. If there is wallpaper on the ceiling, then the wallpaper is painted there first.
  4. To apply the paint, use a paint roller and a paint bath, being careful to apply even, thin layers. Remove excess paint from the roller by rolling it several times along the mesh of the tray before applying it to the surface of the wallpaper.
  5. Movements of the roller along the wall should be from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top.
  6. Strokes of paint must be applied so that each subsequent stroke overlaps the previous one by 2-3 cm. On a smooth surface, the paint must be shaded more carefully so that no visible defects remain.
  7. On the ceiling, paint must be applied in the direction of the light rays. If two or more layers of paint are applied, the directions of application of the layers should be perpendicular to each other.
  8. In hard-to-reach places (corners, window and door openings, etc.) to apply paint, use paint brushes and rollers prepared for corners and joints of different widths.
  9. Paint in several layers, depending on the desired effect. At a minimum, paint on paper wallpaper should be applied in two layers.
  10. After applying each coat of paint, it must dry for at least 4 hours. Then you can apply the next layer.
  11. Painting can be considered complete after the last layer of paint has completely dried and you are convinced that the desired result has been achieved. The result must be assessed in the lighting that should be the main one.

Technology for painting old wallpaper

So, is it possible to paint regular paper wallpaper? It is possible, but not often and only after pre-treatment, since unprepared paper and the water in the paint will soak and deform.

Preparatory work

Instructions:

  1. We take all movable furniture out of the room and cover the non-movable furniture with plastic wrap. It is also advisable to protect the floor from accidental splashes of paint and varnish material.
  2. We clean the surface from all kinds of dust and dirt using a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.
  1. Glue up the peeling areas. If the condition of such fragments is too deplorable, then carefully cut them off.
  1. Damaged areas and scratches are covered with mastic, which after drying is sanded with sandpaper.
  2. We prime the surface. This is the most important step that will protect the wallpaper from paint penetrating into its structure. The primer will create a reliable polymer layer that reduces the porosity of the paper and protects the dilapidated finish from further wear.
  1. After the primer has completely dried, you can begin painting.

Paint selection

Is it possible to paint paper wallpaper with water-based paint? Even necessary. This is the most suitable suspension for the restoration of old wall decoration.

To see this, let's look at its advantages:

  • Ecological cleanliness. When hardened, only harmless water vapors are released, which is important when using the emulsion indoors.
  • Low price. This is achieved due to the absence of an expensive solvent in the composition.
  • Wide range of rich shades. Plus the ability to mix them to create unique color solutions.
  • Moisture resistance. After evaporation of H 2 O, the resulting polymer film has high water resistance.
  • High resistance to abrasion, exposure to sunlight and temperature changes.
  • Non-flammability. For paper finishes, this is a great way to improve fire safety.
  • Ease of application. Does not form drips or streaks.
  • Possibility of wet cleaning. Allows you to keep the renewed coating clean.
  • Long service life. At proper care reaches ten years.

Application of emulsion

  1. Dilute the purchased mixture with water according to the instructions included with it.. If you purchased a white emulsion, then we also add the necessary dyes, mixing everything using a construction mixer or a drill operating at low speed.
  1. Pour the resulting solution into a special paint bath..
  1. Dip a brush into the suspension and paint corners and other hard-to-reach places.
  1. Then we take a paint roller with medium pile, pick up the emulsion with it and run it several times along the ribbed surface, getting rid of excess liquid.

Advice: if you have textured wallpaper for decoration, then it is better to take a tool with long pile.
It will be better able to handle numerous indentations.

  1. We move the tool from left to right, descending from the ceiling to the floor. In this case, it is necessary that each subsequent strip extends a few centimeters onto the previous one.
  2. When the liquid in the roller runs out, we run it over the already painted part of the wall to collect excess suspension from it.
  3. We wait for the first layer to harden, after which we apply the second one perpendicularly.
  4. R We check the result by bringing a bright light source close to the finish.. This way we can see the spots that stand out.
  5. If the check was successful, then we can safely enjoy the work done..

Conclusion

We looked at whether it is possible to paint paper wallpaper and how to do it. First of all, for this you need to carefully prepare the surface.

This includes:

  • cleaning;
  • restoration of deformed areas;
  • creation of a protective moisture-proofing layer.

Next, you should purchase water-based paint that is best suited for the task and apply it with a brush and roller. Follow the recommendations outlined and you will not have any difficulties.

The video in this article will give you an additional opportunity to familiarize yourself with some information that directly relates to the materials discussed. Painting is always easier and cheaper than completely replacing the trim.

There are different opinions about the advisability of painting old paper wallpaper. Indeed, in some cases, it is not even worth starting this process. If they are poorly glued or have significant damage received during use, then painting will not replace gluing new ones.

If they look good, but their color does not match new furniture, just tired or faded, then you can wait a little longer with replacement and get by with painting.

Before you start directly painting old wallpaper, you need to decide on the list of materials and tools that we may need during the work process.

To paint pasted surfaces you need:

  1. Water-repellent coating that prevents the coating from getting wet and, as a result, it coming off the wall;
  2. Dye;
  3. Roller and brushes different sizes. The length of the pile on the roller depends on the relief of the surface being painted. If the surface is smooth, then the roller should have a medium-length pile;
  4. Painting tape, which will be needed to seal the baseboards, thereby protecting them from paint.

You should consider the choice of paint in more detail. They can be: satin, semi-gloss, glossy, semi-matte and matte. The choice depends on the type of surface and lighting in the room. For example, for a kitchen with smooth surfaces, semi-gloss paint is perfect; it will reflect light well and be easy to clean. And a matte finish will fit perfectly into the interior of large halls.

Also, when choosing paint, you need to take into account such characteristics as:

  1. Resistance to light and mechanical stress;
  2. The ability to cover other paint so that it does not show through;
  3. Complete drying time;
  4. Possibility of washing;
  5. Environmental friendliness.

Based on the basics, paints are divided into:

  1. Paints with alkyd base;
  2. Water or latex;
  3. Acrylic.

Before you start painting directly, you need to carry out preparatory work. First, remove dirt, dust and cobwebs from the walls with a vacuum cleaner and sponge. Then you need to seal all the baseboards with masking tape.

Once all this is done, you can proceed to applying the water-repellent coating. It is better to apply it with a roller, and in hard-to-reach places and corners - with a brush.

After a water-repellent coating has been applied to the surface of the walls, you need to maintain the same temperature, avoiding temperature changes and not creating drafts. Failure to follow these rules will result in the wallpaper peeling off or air bubbles forming under its surface.

After the applied coating has completely dried (about a day), you can proceed to the next stage.

The paint must be mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained. If desired, you can add the selected color to it and mix thoroughly. Before applying, be sure to make sure that the paint is exactly the color that was chosen.

Paint can be applied to the prepared surface. This should be done with a roller and in the corners with a brush. Try to apply the paint in an even, thin layer.

You should start painting from the walls that are covered with furniture, thereby practicing on them.

It is better to start painting from the ceiling so that drops of paint do not spoil the already painted surface.

After the first layer has dried, which will take 3-4 hours, you can apply the second.

Once both layers have been applied and dried, the painting can be considered complete.

But if you have no experience in painting work, then in order not to experiment with quality, you can invite a team of professional painters who will carry out the work in a matter of days, and the room will shine with new colors.
