The sink in the kitchen has a strategically important role, so you need to choose and install it yourself correctly.

Choosing a kitchen sink and preparing for its installation

Before deciding how to install a sink into a countertop, you need to decide on the choice of product. The best option– connecting a deep sink and a faucet that is not too high – in this case there will be a minimum of splashes when washing dishes. The sink should be deep so that it is convenient to wash large pots or stack plates after a family dinner.

The material also matters - it is easiest to connect a traditional stainless steel sink yourself. Good decision enamelled steel will also become.

Installing a kitchen sink with your own hands requires the following tools and materials:

  • Sealant;
  • Self-tapping screws and screwdrivers;
  • Jigsaw;
  • Fasteners (as a rule, they are included with the product).

Advice! Before fixing the kitchen sink, you should carefully treat all seats with sealant. This will ensure high-quality waterproofing and protection of the chipboard from damage due to high humidity.

Types of kitchen sinks

Installing a kitchen sink with your own hands can be done using various technologies. The installation method is selected depending on the type of sink structure:

  1. Invoices are considered the most budget-friendly and easiest to install with your own hands. The sink is placed on a separate cabinet. The disadvantage of this option is that there are gaps between the sink and the cabinet.
  1. Mortise ones are installed directly into the tabletop, for which you need to cut out the corresponding hole.

  1. Undercounter sinks belong to the more expensive segment; they are mounted below the countertop, thanks to which they provide excellent sealing and appearance.

Installation of an overhead sink

The affordable overhead (built-in) sink is made of stainless steel. It is mounted on a separate module and covers its entire upper part. It's very easy installation– special L-shaped elements with an oblique slot are used for fastening. About 4-5 such fasteners are provided for one sink.

Advice! The connection of the mixer is carried out before the stage of installing the sink (the sink is installed with the equipment already installed) - otherwise it will be inconvenient to do all this at subsequent stages.

How to attach an overhead sink with your own hands:

  1. You need to attach the L-shaped fasteners to the cabinet from the inside and make notes;
  2. Screw the screws in the marked places. It is important to choose short 15 mm screws and screw them in so that at least 5 mm remains above the mark;
  3. Cover the end of the drawer with sealant - it will protect the furniture and additionally glue the sink;
  4. After this, the sink is installed on the screws screwed into the cabinet and moved until it fits completely;
  5. Then the fasteners are fixed, the excess sealant is wiped off, and you can begin connecting the sink to the water supply and sewerage system.

Inset sink type - step-by-step installation

Of course, it’s easier to install an overhead sink yourself, but a built-in model provides a greater level of tightness and looks very neat on a cabinet with a common countertop. The question of how to embed a sink into a countertop is solved quite simply - you just need to make the right hole for the sink.

Installing a sink into a countertop is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. The location of the sink is found on the countertop and the shape of the future hole is determined. To do this, turn the sink over and trace the contour directly on the countertop or on cardboard. If you have chosen a product of complex shape, then a ready-made template is most likely already included in the kit - this will help you cut out the desired hole;
  2. The finished template is applied to the tabletop at a distance of about 7 centimeters from the edge and begins to be cut out. To do this, step 1.8 cm deep from the edge of the template, leaving support for the sides of the sink;
  3. On the cutting line, first make a hole with a drill, and then cut out the outline with a jigsaw. Bottom part the tabletops are secured so that it does not fall out during cutting and damage the edge of the remaining surface;
  4. Sealant is applied along the contour of the cut. It also covers the lower joints of the sink;
  5. You can start attaching the sink - it is pressed with the included clamps;
  6. After the excess sealant has been removed, you can begin connecting the communications.

Installation of the sink flush or below the level of the countertop. Unusually shaped sinks

An undermount sink can be mounted flush with the countertop - however, this is a labor-intensive process that requires experience, since it involves removing the layer of countertop under the edge. The depth of removal is equal to the height of the side with a layer of sealant.

If you decide to install and connect the sink so that it is below the table level, you will have to resort to the services of specialists. After all, this installation method is chosen for expensive structures - not made of steel, but of natural, artificial stone. For fastening in this case, special tools are required - for example, a jigsaw and saws with diamond coating. Indeed, in such sinks there may not be a hole for draining water - complete sawing of products is not carried out in industrial conditions. Shells from natural materials secured with special mounting adhesive.

Regarding sinks unusual shape, they are supplied with a paper template from which the installation hole is cut.

Do you want to connect the sink yourself correctly? Don't forget 3 more points:

  1. It is better to replace rubber seals with silicone sealant. Rubber will not provide a tight fit and does not have a sufficient service life, while the sealant will fill all the gaps and cracks;
  2. It is better to connect sinks made of natural or artificial stone together to prevent falls and damage;
  3. Fastening the sink to the countertop or module with self-tapping screws is carried out exclusively by hand. Using a tool may create too much tension, which may damage the structure.

Main rules of connection

When the installation work is completed, you can connect the sink. To do this, the hoses through which cold and hot water, are connected to the general water supply system.

Advice! The connection requires the use of a rubber gasket to better seal the joint.

After the hoses are secured, the connection is made in the following sequence:

  • A siphon outlet is inserted into the sink (it is better to use S-shaped designs, since the bottle one gets clogged too quickly);
  • A pipe (angular rigid or flexible corrugated) is added to the siphon;
  • The pipe from the siphon is discharged into sewer pipe;
  • All connections are checked for leaks.

It may turn out that the diameters of the pipes from the siphon or sewer are very different. In this case, it is necessary to use an adapter - a sealing collar. At this point, the installation of the kitchen sink is considered complete.

A mandatory attribute of any kitchen is a sink, so no kitchen renovation is complete without replacing and installing it. Many owners are trying to learn how to properly install a sink in the kitchen with their own hands without the help of professionals, in order to thus save on the installation crew. In reality, there is nothing complicated about this, the main thing is to know some of the nuances, which we will discuss below.

Surface-mounted sink

Types of sinks

All sinks existing today differ in the installation method.

They are:

  • Invoices;
  • Mortise.

It should also be said that there is also mounted option, however, in our time it is no longer relevant. But overhead and mortise sinks compete with each other in popularity, and their aesthetic appeal is almost comparable.

Installation of a mortise sink

This type of product has recently become particularly popular among our population, as it is practical and has an attractive design. In addition, the countertop into which the sink is embedded can be made of any material. Unlike an overhead sink, the dimensions of the cabinet practically do not matter.

Sink template

Any defects in this design are possible only if the installation work was carried out incorrectly or as a result of leaky joints.

Work order

To perform the installation efficiently, it is necessary to carry out the markings correctly.

The instructions look like this:

  1. The product is supplied in a cardboard package, which at the same time serves as a template for cutting out the tabletop. Therefore, first of all, you need to separate the stencil from the rest of the packaging.
  2. Then the template should be placed on the surface of the countertop in the place where the sink will be located and secured with masking tape. The contours must be outlined with a pencil.
  3. Next, you need to cut out the opening using a jigsaw. To do this, you must first drill a hole so that the tool can penetrate inside. You should cut out slowly, without putting any effort on the tool, so that the cut does not turn out oblique.
  4. After this, the edges of the tabletop must be treated with sanitary silicone so that the cut area becomes sufficiently water-resistant.
  5. Then the sink is tried on. If the operation was successful, then fastening and sealing is performed.

Cutting a tabletop with a jigsaw

Advice!
To prevent the silicone from hardening, you should first prepare the sink for installation.
After installing it, the fastener should snap into place.

Before installing a sink in the kitchen, you need to choose the most suitable place for it.

In addition, there are other nuances:

  • It is advisable to determine the location of the mixer in advance, since some models may require a specially shaped cutout.
  • Experts recommend removing the drain, as well as installing filters and valves before installation. kitchen furniture.
  • When marking the countertop, you need to take into account the crossbars and cabinet walls, so you need to take careful measurements before applying the markings to the countertop.
  • If the siphon is installed on a long outlet, it is advisable to tie it to the bottom of the countertop. Otherwise, the structure may sag under the weight of water.

Sink installation

Advice!
The distance from the back side of the sink to the wall should be at least 10-15 cm.
Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to wipe the countertop at the sink.

Installation of an overhead sink

It must be said that installing overhead sinks with your own hands is much easier than installing sinks. During the installation process, there is no need to cut the surface, since the product is installed on a cabinet with side walls, doors, but without a tabletop.

Surface-mounted sink

Preparatory work

Before installing the sink, it is necessary to insert siphon and faucet outlets into the cabinet. After fixing the product, this work will be much more difficult. In addition, it would be a good idea to treat the ends of the cabinet with silicone, since this procedure will protect the cabinet from moisture and thereby extend its service life.

Mounting methods

There are several ways to secure the product to the cabinet:

  • Fixation with glue. This method involves placing the sides of the sink on the edges of the cabinet, which are pre-coated with silicone sealant or other sealant. In this case, the edges of the sink must be pressed against the ends of the cabinet and left in this position until the composition dries.
  • Installation with mounting brackets. Fixation is carried out using special brackets, which are usually included in the package. The installation process consists of alternately fixing four plates with screws.
  • If the cabinet or sink does not come with mounting brackets or the cabinet is defective, you can use wooden blocks . To do this you should buy wooden elements required size and furniture corners, the price of which is very low.

The photo shows a mount for installing a sink.

Completion of installation work

The last step in installing an overhead sink is connecting the siphon to the sewer. In addition, the flexible hoses that come from the mixer should be connected to the water supply. Before checking the system, you need to open the aerator and then turn on the water. This way, all garbage will come out of the system.

Advice!
After installing the fittings, turn on the hot water to check the tightness.

Conclusion

Now, having familiarized yourself with the nuances of installation, you can cope with this work without outside help. The main thing is to take your time and follow all instructions. In the case of a built-in sink, the quality of installation will primarily depend on the accuracy of the markings and cutout of the countertop.

For more information on this topic, watch the video in this article.

Since the sink is one of the most popular plumbing devices in the house, special requirements are placed on the quality of its installation.

Fast and with guaranteed results this work It will be done by an invited master, but you can do it on your own.

Of course, the complexity of installation depends on the type of sink chosen. For example, installing a sink under a countertop will require a lot of time and effort, but installing a countertop sink is very simple task, even a beginner can handle it.

Features of choosing a sink for the kitchen

Sinks of any shape and design are available for sale. Choosing a bowl for the most sophisticated kitchen will not be difficult. Models from different manufacturers differ in a number of characteristics, primarily the material used.

In specialized stores you can find sinks from:

  • of stainless steel;
  • metal coated with enamel;
  • acrylic;
  • glass;
  • stone and even wood.

Another important characteristic is the installation method. Most often on modern kitchen you can see built-in sinks, they are practical, reliable, durable, their installation does not require special skills.

Invoices

Sinks of this type are simply put on the cabinet. As a rule, it is pressed from stainless steel or other sheet material tabletop. In addition to the sink itself, it contains a small table, often ribbed, to ensure water drainage. These models are distinguished by their low price and ease of installation. The downside is that there is always a gap between the sink and the walls of the cabinet that will collect dirt.

Drop-in sinks

Unlike the previous type, this sink is built into the furniture. To do this, make a hole in the countertop into which the bowl is “recessed.” Such models have a more attractive appearance and are distinguished by their abundance design solutions. They can be installed on any surface, have any shape, they are not tied to the standard parameters of kitchen furniture.

Undercounter sinks

The difference between such sinks is clear - instead of being embedded, they are mounted under a hole in the countertop. Properly chosen and correctly installed, such a sink will become a real decoration of the kitchen. It looks attractive and is practical. There are no protruding parts above the tabletop that would allow dirt to accumulate and make cleaning difficult. The disadvantages include the high price and complexity of installation.

Preparing for work

You can install any type of kitchen sink yourself; of course, you will have to try hard to do it. Work should begin with the preparation of tools and material. The list of what you will need largely depends on the type of sink. If you need to install an overhead sink, all you need to do is acquire fasteners, buy self-tapping screws, and prepare a screwdriver or screwdriver. For mortise and under-table models, list the necessary tool a little wider.

Required:

  • pencil, ruler, tape measure;
  • electric drill;
  • round drill attachment for grinding;
  • screwdriver, flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • jigsaw;
  • sharp knife;
  • sandpaper.

To install any type of sink, a sealant is useful. You can buy cheap silicone, but it is better to give preference to special compounds with an antiseptic. This will protect against mold and the spread of unpleasant odors.

Installation of an overhead sink

The easiest way to work is with overhead-type models. Sinks of all standard sizes are available for sale; for installation, you must first purchase or manufacture a module (cabinet) with the same dimensions.

Important! Before attaching the sink to the cabinet in the kitchen, it is worth spending a little time processing the ends.

As a rule, kitchen furniture is made from chipboard or other similar boards, which are extremely susceptible to high humidity. Furniture must be protected. It is easier and more effective to cover the end with a layer of sealant. It will ensure a tight fit of the sink and protect the cabinet from moisture.

Before installing the overhead sink, you need to install and secure the mixer. It’s easier to do this before the sink is secured, after which all that remains is to connect the water.

For fixation, a special fastener is used - a corner with holes. It is screwed to the walls of the cabinet using self-tapping screws. Put the sink on, move it until it fits snugly, clamp it, and remove excess sealant.

Installation steps for a mortise sink

This type of sink looks much more impressive, although it is more difficult to install. The process of installing a sink into a kitchen countertop will require time and effort, but the result will exceed all expectations.

Marking

Before marking the hole, you need to choose a place for washing. This important stage, on which the convenience of using the sink, its functionality and the durability of the countertop itself depend. When choosing a place, you should be guided by your own preferences, but do not forget that too thin material around the bowl can cause a decrease in the strength of the kitchen furniture.

Note! It is recommended to make an indentation of about 5 cm from the front edge of the tabletop, and at least 2.5 cm from the wall. If for some reason smaller indentations are required, you will have to strengthen the tabletop from below using several bars.

The place has been chosen, it meets all the requirements and wishes - it’s time to start marking. For this you will need a template. Included with expensive sinks, especially those with an original shape, is a paper stencil that you just need to attach to the countertop and trace with a pencil; if you don’t have one, you’ll have to make it yourself.

The template will require a sheet of cardboard comparable in size to the dimensions of the sink. A bowl is placed on it and the outer contours are outlined. Next, you need to select the part that will rest directly on the countertop. Actually, this is the width of the side. It is measured and transferred to cardboard. It is also worth immediately noting the places where the sink will be attached to the countertop.

Using scissors or a utility knife, cut a hole. To make sure that everything is done correctly, the template is put on the sink, and if necessary, the curvature of the lines is adjusted. If everything is within normal limits, the contours are transferred to the tabletop.

Sawing a hole

The best tool for cutting curved shapes is electric jigsaw. Instead, you can use a manual or electric hacksaw with a thin blade, but then the cut will look sloppy.

The work is not particularly difficult. Having selected the optimal diameter of the drill, drill several holes for the blade to enter. The holes should be near the cutting line on the inside of the future cutout, but not intersect it.

A jigsaw blade is inserted into one of the holes and moved along the contour, focusing on the drawn line. There is no need to rush, otherwise chips and nicks will appear.

Advice! To prevent the nail file from pinching and the cut part from sagging, screw self-tapping screws as you move into the cut.

Once the cut is completed, the screws are removed. In this case, it is necessary to support the slab from below, preventing it from falling. You should immediately check the correctness of the cut hole; to do this, lower the bowl into it and check the gaps. The sink should not touch the walls, but also not move too far from them.

Next, the inner surface is treated. It is easier and more efficient to do this using a cylindrical attachment on an electric drill; fine grinding is done manually with sandpaper. The result should be a smooth surface without roughness or burrs.

Installation and fixation

Since the kitchen is a room with high humidity, the inner cut surface must be protected from water and steam. The cut is coated with sealant, leveling the layer with a plastic spatula or a finger moistened with soapy water. If chips occur during sawing decorative covering countertops, they are also sealed.

Next, seal the joint between the bowl and the countertop. Often, the manufacturer completes its products with a seal made of foamed polyethylene, which is glued to the inner surface of the sink. This is convenient, but you need to make sure that the seal does not extend beyond the perimeter of the sides, otherwise you will not be able to press the bowl tightly to the countertop.

To prevent the sink from moving during operation, it is additionally fixed. The bowl must be secured securely, as it can withstand heavy loads. As a rule, fasteners are included in the delivery kit; these are brackets of various shapes that wrap around the tabletop and are clamped from the inside using bolts or screws.

Fixing the bowl is a delicate job; a screwdriver is not suitable for this; you can only work with a screwdriver, controlling the pressure. Tighten the screws diagonally; sealant evenly squeezed out around the perimeter will confirm that the sink is securely fixed.

The last thing left to do is assembling and connecting the siphon. The installation is complete, you can supply water to the mixer and use the sink one hundred percent.

Features of installing a sink under the countertop

The process of installing a sink below the countertop level is in many ways similar to installing a simple mortise model; this work can also be done with your own hands. Of course, this statement is only true if the countertop is made of wood or wood-based panels; working with exotic materials, like stone, is unlikely to be possible at home.

Just like in the previous case, the work begins with markings. Immediately mark the installation locations of the fastening elements. Cut a hole. The surface is carefully polished. The cut of the slab is covered with a special film, and the wood is covered with several layers of varnish. Attach the bowl following the manufacturer's instructions.

You can install a sink of any type and shape home handyman. You just need to stock up on tools and prepare the material. For everything to work out, it is important to follow a few simple rules.

It is better to work with an assistant; you only need to clamp the fasteners manually, “feeling” the screwdriver, and, most importantly, do not rush. Installing a sink is exactly the case when one wrong move can ruin the whole job.

When purchasing kitchen furniture, it is often necessary to replace the old sink with a new model. Installing a sink in the kitchen without the use of outside help is possible - the procedure is simple, but you need to know certain features and rules different ways installation

Main types of sinks and installation methods

The modern market of plumbing fixtures offers big choice sinks to the kitchen. They have different variants installations are made of various materials:

  • stainless steel;
  • stone;

  • ceramics.

According to the installation method, the following types are distinguished:

  • invoices- mounted directly on top of the cabinet, instead of the countertop. This option is the easiest to install with a modular kitchen design. Overhead models are almost never used for solid countertops, so as not to create a gap between the cabinets;

  • mortise- a common option for the kitchen, suitable for installation in countertops or cabinets. In the first case, you will need to cut a hole for the sink of the required size;

  • integrated- the sink and the cabinet are a single whole, this method is used during the manufacture of the set;

  • under-table - modern version installation in which the sink is slightly lower than the countertop. The ends of the working area are under constant exposure to water, so you need to choose moisture-resistant materials; MDF and chipboard are not suitable; glass or stone are preferable.

The kitchen must be ergonomic so that it can be used quickly and comfortably. When installing a sink, you need to take into account that the distance from it to the refrigerator and stove should be 40 cm, a similar rule applies to hob and a refrigerator.

For right-handers, it is better to place the sink on the right and the dryer on the left. The sink should be located in close proximity to the water supply and sewerage system.

When choosing a sink, you need to consider several important features:

  • capacity, on which the number and size of dishes in the house that will be used most often depends;

  • functionality, which is characterized by the work carried out in the kitchen. For example, you can buy and install a sink with several bowls, with wings, drainage and other accessories. Such elements will simplify work if cooking, washing dishes and other activities are carried out very often;

  • ease of use- it depends on individual characteristics, the housewife should be comfortable using the product;

  • wear resistance- determined by shell materials;
  • combination with style kitchens.

To perform high-quality installation work with your own hands, you should understand the basic rules and errors of installation, the stages of work for different types installations.

Rules for installing kitchen sinks

When deciding on the method of installing a sink in the kitchen, you need to understand that you will be able to do the work yourself with an overhead or mortise version. Other models require not only specific knowledge and skills, but also additional tools. Before starting work, a siphon for water drainage, a mixer are installed, and all materials and tools are prepared.

During installation, it is important to consider additional rules:

  • The sink divides the workspace into 2 zones. On one they carry out dirty work, on the second they carry out clean work;
  • the sink should be placed close to the work area to simplify the process of cleaning, cutting and other actions;
  • you need to use the “golden triangle” rule - place the sink at a standard distance from the refrigerator, stove and other appliances;

  • the height of the sides of the bowl should be level with the cutting part, standard size is 82–86 cm;
  • be sure to use a level when placing the sink to prevent distortion and align it strictly horizontally;
  • installation is possible only after installing water pipes and sewerage;
  • the brackets must tightly fix the plumbing fixtures, eliminating any backlash;
  • all water supply hoses must be placed freely, without fractures or bends;
  • you can install the sink opposite the window;
  • if the kit includes rubber seals, it is better to use sealant instead, this will increase the service life and tightness of the structure;
  • Stone sinks are best installed by two people due to their heavy weight.

In fact, plumbing fixtures are placed next to water and sewer pipes. This is done in one of the corners of the kitchen or on a certain wall. Modern materials and installation methods make it possible to carry the product anywhere in the room. The choice of installation type depends on the individual preferences of the owners and the style of the kitchen.

For self-installation no overhead models of professional tools are required. If a mortise type is used, then you need to prepare in advance:

  • drill and drill bits of different diameters;
  • screwdrivers;
  • tape measure, ruler and pencil;
  • sealant, sealant;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw.

Now you can begin the actual installation work.

Assembling the sink, faucet and siphon

The easiest way to install is with the sink assembled with a faucet, hoses and siphon. The assembly of the structure is carried out according to the following scheme.

  1. Initially, a pin is placed on the faucet and secured with a nut; these elements are always included in the kit.
  2. Hoses are connected to the mixer. The short needle is connected first, then the long one. They are screwed in by hand and tightened with a wrench with medium force to prevent damage to the gasket.
  3. The hoses are passed into the hole on the sink, the mixer itself is inserted using a moon-shaped gasket, everything is secured with a nut clamp.
  4. Next, the siphon is assembled and connected. At this stage, it is enough to secure the drain and overflow parts.

Having assembled the main parts, you can begin installing the sink into a cabinet or countertop.

Installation of an overhead sink

Such models are most often made of stainless steel. On either side of the sink there are curved edges that match the thickness of the cabinet slide. To simplify fastening, a frame made of wooden blocks is often placed in the middle. If the cabinet is of standard sizes, then there are no difficulties with the entire procedure, but, depending on the type of sink, there are several installation options.

Glue mounting

The installation scheme is the simplest, even beginners can handle it. The sink is placed on a prepared cabinet, and the sanitary ware itself should be wider than the underframe, and the ribs will cover the slide of the cabinet. The ends of the furniture must first be coated with silicone-based sealant around the entire perimeter, the sink must be installed and pressed down.

After the adhesive mixture has completely dried, a tight fixation will be obtained. In addition, silicone will prevent water from getting under the cabinet.

Bracket mounting

In this option, the sink is fixed with fasteners, which are sold separately or included with the plumbing fixtures. First of all, screw the screws inside the cabinet, put the brackets on them, but do not clamp them. You should tighten the screws on the sink and place it, move the fixing corners along the screws so that the self-tapping screw fits into the recess and the sink fits tightly to the furniture. Finally, tighten the fasteners and, if desired, lubricate everything with sealant.

Mounting on a wooden frame

If standard fasteners are not suitable or are not available at all, then make a wooden frame with your own hands. The bars must be placed in the cabinet around the perimeter, and metal corners must be screwed in. The height of the slats can be adjusted so that the sink is level with the rest of the furniture. The kitchen element is placed on the finished frame and additionally coated with sealant.

Any fasteners should be tightened manually with wrenches, without using electric tools, to prevent damage to the plumbing. If you use a sink made of artificial stone or other heavy materials, then you need to prepare additional fasteners. For this purpose, a metal or wood strip is suitable, which is placed on back wall along the length of the sink.

When a ceramic sink is used, it can be installed without a cabinet, directly to the wall. For this, special fasteners are used. The execution procedure is as follows.

  1. The height is marked on the wall, the standard size is 80 cm, but it is important to take into account the height of the owners and the location of the furniture.
  2. A second line is drawn a little lower, and the distance between them indicates the thickness of the back of the sink where the fasteners will be located.
  3. The distance between the holes in the plumbing for its fastening is measured and the data is transferred to the wall.
  4. The wall is drilled, a bracket is inserted, and the sink is fixed on it.

When using the described installation rules, overhead kitchen plumbing fixtures will be installed independently in a short time without special difficulties. A properly performed process will ensure a long service life.

Installation of mortise sinks

Built-in sinks are equipped with fastening parts, as well as a cardboard template for marking the countertop, thereby simplifying the entire process. If there is no template, then the sink itself is used to correctly draw the contours. Similar to the instructions already described, it is necessary to assemble all the elements in advance. The scheme for doing the work is as follows.

Leave the plumbing for 3-5 hours so that the silicone dries, then connect to the sewer. The corner sink is mounted in a similar way; there are no special features other than placement in the countertop.

Installation of other types of sinks and connection to sewerage

In addition to the overhead and mortise models of sinks, there are other types. Their installation is often carried out by specialists, due to the need for experience and special tools. For the under-counter option, you will need to make a neat and even cutout in the countertop according to the clear dimensions of the sink.

The sink is lowered into the cut hole, and its edges should fit tightly, this will prevent moisture from entering. A special fastener or frame is made under the countertop, on which the plumbing rests. All joints must be sealed with sealant. The main difficulty lies in cutting out even and clear dimensions, as well as in fastening. Any mistake will result in the need to replace the countertop.

For an integrated type, the rules are almost the same; it is very important to make an accurate hole and properly seal the parts. Installation begins in a similar way to the mortise type, since a cutout is created in the countertop, with the exception of the sides of the sink.

They go around the perimeter with a rebate cutter to make a recess for the side of the sink. The plumbing fixtures are placed on the sealant, and after it dries, they are fixed with brackets. This option is perfect if the sink and countertop are made of stone - in this case, the perfect combination is obtained.

After installation by any method, the plumbing must be connected to the water supply and sewerage system. First, you need to insert the corrugation from the siphon into the sewer pipe and seal it with a gasket or cuff. Then connect the flexible hoses to the pipes with cold and hot water, tighten the nuts. Be sure to monitor the presence and position of gaskets.

Having connected all elements, open the water, check the quality of assembly, possible leaks. If everything is normal, then the work was done efficiently, does not require any modifications, and the kitchen sink is ready for use.

Selecting a sealant

The sealant plays an important role in installation. Market building materials offers several options for this tool:

  • acrylic- does not contain harmful substances, excellent for metal, chipboard and MDF, dries quickly. The main disadvantage is strong shrinkage and rigidity; joints can crack over the years and will allow water to pass through;
  • polyurethane- suitable for places with high humidity and unstable temperatures, has excellent adhesion to almost all materials. The sealant is elastic and practically does not shrink, but it is better not to use it for MDF, chipboard, or plastic. The polyurethane composition is ideal for sinks made of stone, granite, and metal;
  • silicone- elastic, does not shrink, has excellent adhesion.

Apply any sealant to clean materials to improve grip. Without preliminary preparation, cracks may appear and moisture may enter.

Possible mistakes

When placing kitchen sinks yourself, mistakes are often made that lead to undesirable consequences. People often save space by not taking into account the requirements for the distance between the sink and other equipment, which should be at least 40 cm. There are also other miscalculations:

  • incorrect choice of kitchen sink size;
  • tilting of the installed sink - occurs if you work without a level;
  • incorrectly selected pipes and siphon;
  • poor access due to inconvenient location;
  • insufficient sealing during mortise-type installation;
  • poor-quality fixation of fastening parts, which leads to mobility of plumbing fixtures;
  • water penetration under furniture.

To avoid errors and correctly perform the process yourself, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the video, which describes in detail the work processes and all the subtleties of mortise-type installation:

To preserve its original appearance and for long-term use, it is recommended to monitor the sink, providing it with the necessary care. After each dishwashing, you should wipe the product dry and do not place hot or very cold surfaces. The appearance of an unpleasant odor and leaks leads to the need to inspect the siphon, pipes and mixer - cleaning may be required. If parts are damaged, they are repaired or completely replaced.

Today you can install a kitchen sink that suits your taste. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to contact a qualified specialist for this - usually such a procedure as installing a sink in a countertop with your own hands can be completed. But in any case, the kitchen sink is truly strategic, and therefore its selection and especially its installation should be approached with all responsibility.

Types of sinks according to installation method

There are several technologies for installing a kitchen sink. The choice of one option or another depends, first of all, on the type of design of the sink itself.

It is not surprising that representatives of the latter group are the most popular today. They, unlike overhead models, provide high-quality sealing, but are much cheaper than their under-table counterparts. In short, optimal value for money.

Key features of choosing a sink

Even before purchasing a sink and starting work, you must decide which product you will install. It is better to give preference to deep sinks and fairly low faucets - in this case, splashes during washing dishes will be minimal. The deep depth of the sink is needed to make it convenient for you to place dirty plates there or wash large pots.

In addition, pay attention to the material - it is much easier to install a traditional sink made of stainless steel yourself. Although enameled steel can be considered another good option.

On a note! As for a specific manufacturer, one should proceed solely from financial capabilities and personal preferences.

What do you need to install a kitchen sink?

To embed a sink into a countertop with your own hands, you must prepare the following materials and tools:

  • pencil;
  • electric drill, metal drill for it (1 cm in diameter);
  • roulette;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • construction corner;
  • sharp knife;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • sealant (plumbing or universal);
  • self-tapping screws (dimensions – 4x30 mm).

Note! It is important to prepare everything necessary equipment even before you begin installation, otherwise you will have to waste time searching for them during the work.

How to embed a sink into a countertop - step by step guide

At first glance, the installation procedure is not complicated. However, there are a number of nuances that emerge immediately after the start of work. Such nuances will be discussed - traditionally, in the form of illustrated step-by-step instructions.

We have already talked about the criteria for choosing a kitchen sink; we will only add that if you want to purchase a budget option– we recommend paying attention to the German Franke sink, made of stainless steel. It will cost more than Chinese models, but it is made of thin high-quality steel, and not of “thick foil”, like them. This is exactly the type of sink that is installed in this example.

Almost all modern drop-in sinks are sold in a cardboard box, which additionally acts as a template for cutting into the countertop. This template must first be cut out for subsequent installation of the sink.

Next, the cut out template must be placed on the tabletop, and then aligned parallel to its sides. Then you should check if there are any elements under the selected location that could interfere with the installation of the sink. When the optimal location of the product is chosen, the template must be secured with masking tape and outlined with a pencil.

Now you can start cutting out the template, for which it is convenient to use an electric jigsaw. But first you need to drill initial holes in the tabletop with a diameter slightly larger than the size of the jigsaw blade.

It is also advisable to protect the perimeter around the future cutout with the same masking tape, otherwise the jigsaw may damage the tabletop. There is no need to rush directly during cutting, as the saw may deviate and the cutout will end up crooked.

When the opening is cut, its edges should be treated with sanitary silicone (this will make the cut waterproof). Then you need to wait until the silicone hardens.

In our example (as you can see in the image below), not only the countertop itself has to be cut, but also certain elements of the kitchen furniture.

If so, once again you need to use the cardboard sink template, but this time on the inside.

Now you need to cut out the elements of the opening for the sink, and, again, treat all the cuts with silicone.

After this, you can try on the sink and see if everything fits. If everything is fine with this, you can proceed to further work.

Everything necessary for assembling the siphon (it must be purchased separately) should be unpacked and checked, then carefully study the assembly instructions.

There is nothing complicated in assembling the siphon itself, except that one of the tubes will need to be cut to size.

All communications must be connected before installing the sink. In our example this is gas pipe from the balloon (it is orange) and water pipes(they're green).

Holes for water pipes should be made in the kitchen cabinet. Work should begin with marking the future location of the latter.

All excess must be trimmed using a jigsaw.

The next stage is another treatment of the sections with sanitary silicone.

Now you can lay water pipes (preferably, as in the example, polypropylene) to the sink and water purification filter.

Here is a diagram of the piping under the kitchen sink.

Before installing the sink, you should install the drinking water tap.

Preparing to install the mixer. To mark the holes for it, you need to take a cardboard template in order to transfer their projection.

In accordance with the projection, holes should be drilled in the sink through which the mixer will be attached.

The next stage is the actual installation of the mixer.

After this, you need to try on the fasteners for the sink. According to German developers, for some reason plastic latches will be quite enough to hold the product.

Note! In addition, in some places such latches are simply inconvenient to attach.

An alternative option is to use strips of mounting tape (they need to be threaded into the “ears” of the fasteners).

Also, before installing the product, the edges of the opening should be sealed with a sealant.

The sink must be fixed using self-tapping screws through the mounting tape.

That's it, the kitchen sink is installed in the countertop! Now all that remains is to treat all the gaps with sanitary sealant, and cut off the remainder after the material has hardened.

Installation example without using a cardboard template

If such a template is missing for one reason or another, do not be discouraged, because it is quite possible to insert a sink without it. The procedure itself in this case is also not complicated, but brief instructions for installation is given in the table below.

Table. Master class on installing a kitchen sink into a countertop.

Steps, photoDescription of actions

Having chosen a suitable place, you need to turn the sink upside down and place it on the countertop where the product will be located. The position of the sink is leveled using a tape measure.

When installing a sink, do not forget about the overhangs of the countertop, as well as the connections of the kitchen cabinet. For this reason, the sink should be positioned in such a way that the fasteners do not rest against the connections of the lower cabinet, and the product itself does not protrude beyond its front surface.

Next you need to outline the outline of the sink.

Measurement of sides. The width of the mortise opening will be less than that of the sink. In most cases, such sides are 1.4 cm wide, but it is advisable to check this.

The dimensions must be transferred to the tabletop, and then mark the cut line.

Next, you need to take a drill with a diameter of 0.8-1 cm and use it to make through holes in the corners of the contour. The latter, as in the previous instructions, will be required in order to start the jigsaw file.

A jigsaw file should be inserted into one of the holes, and then the opening should be cut in accordance with the markings.

The opening is almost ready.

Now you need to carefully remove the sawn piece of the tabletop.

The edges of the opening must be mandatory coat with silicone. In the absence of a special device that can be used to squeeze silicone out of a tube, you can use the handle of a simple hammer for this.

So, the edges are coated with silicone.

Next, you need to prepare the seal and fasteners (all of this should also be included in the kit).

The fasteners should be installed, but it is recommended to degrease the sides before gluing the seal (for example, with solvent “646”).

After this, the sides must be covered with a sealant.

The next step is installing the sink with all its fasteners in place. Before tightening the fasteners, you should once again check the position of the product and, if necessary, align it.

At the end, the fasteners must be tightened.

That's it, the sink is safely installed. Now all that remains is to screw on the faucet, hang the drain and connect the communications, but all this has already been described in detail in the previous section of the article.

As a result - a few more useful tips. If you want to properly install and connect the sink, remember three important nuances.

  1. Instead of rubber seals, it is better to use silicone sealant. The fact is that rubber is unable to provide a tight fit, and its service life is short. But the sealant will qualitatively fill all the cracks and gaps.
  2. It is recommended to fasten the sink with self-tapping screws exclusively by hand. If you use a tool, this can lead to severe stress and, as a result, damage to the structure.
  3. If the sink is made of stone (artificial or natural), then installation will require at least two people to avoid falling and damaging the product.

Note! When connecting the sink to the communications, it is necessary to use rubber gaskets so that the joints are better sealed.

Stainless steel sink care

The main thing is to avoid scratches and microcracks on the surface, and also follow the recommendations below.

  1. Abrasive cleaning products and metal sponges should be completely avoided. They leave cracks on the surface of the product, which (even if not visible to the naked eye) will “grow” over time and become a serious external defect.
  2. There is no need to place heavy objects on the sink - they can lead not only to the damage mentioned above, but also to deformation.
  3. It is better to give preference to gel detergents, because they are less aggressive.

If you follow these simple rules, you can extend the life of your stainless steel kitchen sink and maintain the visual appeal of the product for many years.
