Black tiles in the bathroom

Black tiling looks elegant and solid, but be aware that black absorbs more light than any other color. In an effort to create a luxurious interior with black tiles, it is very likely that you will end up with a dark, dull, dreary and depressing room as a result. Why? Because it will lack light and cheerful colors. This is especially true for small rooms - such as a bathroom.

There are usually no problems with beige or, for example, blue tiles for a bathroom: an interior with a finish in such colors always turns out to be light, pleasant and cozy. Having decided to use black tiles for the bathroom and toilet, you should carefully consider all the details and exercise design caution so that you do not regret choosing a color later.

If the room feels small, black tiles should be finished no more than one third of the surface area. For example, you can lay black tiles on the floor and partially finish the walls with it, combining it with a light finish. Or put light tiles on the floor, and finish the walls with black tiles at half their height.

If the room is spacious enough, black tiles can be finished two thirds of the surfaces. A standard bathroom has 6 surfaces: ceiling, floor and four walls. Therefore, the floor and three walls can be made black. Or lay tiles on all four walls, but in this case the floor and ceiling should be light.

Compliance with this rule will allow you not to overdo it with the amount of black and thereby prevent the bathroom and toilet from turning into an oppressive dungeon.

Black tiles in the bathroom and toilet: color combination

The most successful partners for black are white and cream. If black absorbs light, then white and cream, on the contrary, reflect it. Accordingly, these colors perfectly balance the darkness of black, which makes the interior more harmonious.

Black bathroom tiles in combination with white give a spectacular picture. Its effect lies in absolute contrast. However, this is also a disadvantage of this combination: a contrasting interior can tire and unnerve. Moreover, this property is superimposed on the ability of black to reduce mood. Not the most pleasant "bouquet" of characteristics of a black and white combination, is it? How to reduce or completely nullify the negative impact?

First, do not make frequent, rhythmic alternations of black and white tiles on large wall surfaces. It is possible to trim the apron at the sink with black and white tiles laid in a checkerboard pattern, but you should not use this scheme for the entire wall.

It is better to combine walls: white - black or cream - black. Another good option is to divide the wall into large black and white sections horizontally or vertically.

Such combinations will be perceived more positively. Judge for yourself how complex and oppressive the interior is, in which black and white tiles alternate on all surfaces:

It is hardly possible to call such a bathroom cozy and elegant. The definition of "extreme" is more suitable for her.

The rhythmic and continuous alternation of black and white tiles should be used only for the floor, but there are secrets here. Firstly, for a small bathroom, laying large black and white tiles in a checkerboard pattern is not suitable. This creates unwanted visual effects, making the room seem even smaller than it really is:

If you want a checkerboard black and white floor, in a compact bathroom or toilet, you should give preference to small format tiles.

Better yet, lay black and white tiles on the floor in a different way, since there are enough options. For example, stripes: if you make stripes in width, the bathroom will appear wider, and if in length, the room will visually stretch. You can lay tiles in diagonal black and white - this will add visual volume to the room.

Another way to lay black and white tiles in the bathroom and toilet, which allows you to hide the lack of volume and layout errors, is to lay tiles in a herringbone pattern or in a run, as in the photo below:

Continuing the conversation about combining black tiles in the bathroom and toilet, it is worth saying that the lower contrast has combination of black tiles with cream finish, and not with white - the interior of the bathroom turns out to be softer and calmer, and the light in the room does not become less.

To compensate for the gloom of black tiles, light borders, tiled panels and decorative insert tiles with silver, gold and color ornaments will help. However, if the bathroom is small, you should not use too many decors: it is ugly and creates a feeling of oversaturation.

Black tiles in the bathroom and toilet can be combined with tiles in other colors, not just white and cream. However, such combinations are far from always successful: in some cases, the surfaces come out too dark (as, for example, in combination with), boring (in tune with), or too flashy (in combination with red, purple, etc.).

If a color companion is chosen for black tiles, it is still worth diluting this alliance with a white or cream finish - whether it's tiles or just painting one or two walls.

As for sinks and bathtubs, white, black, and cream-colored items will fit equally well into the interior of a bathroom with black tiles. However, you need to remember the proportions of black and light: if there are a lot of dark surfaces in the bathroom, it is better to choose a light bath and a toilet bowl.

In a spacious bathroom with a lot of mirrors and light sources, black plumbing fixtures will look luxurious.

Black tiles in the bathroom and toilet: a combination of installation methods

If black tiles are laid both on the wall and on the floor, it is worth choosing different laying methods for these surfaces: for example, lay square tiles on the floor with rhombuses, and on the wall with rectangular brickwork. There are a lot of options here.

Why is it necessary to diversify the styling pattern? Because the monotonous installation will create a visual effect of merging walls and floors. This brings discomfort, making the bathroom uncomfortable.

For the same reason, it is recommended to choose a light contrasting grout for black tiles. A clear boundary between walls and floors and an emphasis on the tiled structure of the floor and walls bring order to the interior of the bathroom, which is perceived much more positively.

By varying the methods, you can achieve very interesting effects. It is worth remembering that black is not, but the absence of color. Therefore, the structure, texture and pattern of the surface are of particular importance, because something should be emphasized.

Black bathroom and toilet: more color and light

One of the main design challenges of a black or black and white bathroom is to introduce enough light. There are some simple secrets. For example, it is desirable to make the wall that will be reflected in the largest bathroom mirror light. This will significantly increase the level of light in the room.
