Wallpaper with history

Thanks to its qualities, Linkrust wallpaper has withstood the test of centuries, reaching us from the distant 1877. Initially, the coatings were made by hand by the Englishman Frederick Walton. The entrepreneur used only natural materials: wax, wood, oil. These paintings were destined to decorate the walls of Buckingham Palace and the chambers of the royal nobility.

A citizen of Foggy Albion invented special wall coverings and called them wall linoleum, and then renamed them Linkrusta-Walton. The composition of the material - wood flour, rosin, wax, linseed oil, chalk - has not changed for many years. Linkrust canvases are still produced at the company's plant in Lancashire. The method of applying relief is simple - a paper or fabric base with a plastic mass passes through special rollers, which give the material a varied relief. In subsequent years, the material (though own production) were even used to decorate the metro during the USSR (although it is difficult to call such wallpaper Linkrusta, because they were produced on the basis of PVC and did not have such an aesthetic appearance).

Canvases with character

Linkrust wallpaper is not similar to other materials either in the process of production and gluing, or in decoration and care. Even modern high-tech painting materials do not have the qualities and features of Linkrusta and are not able to give the room such luxury.

What are the features of natural material for wall covering?

  • Before reaching store windows, the canvases require 2 months of rest. During this time, odors and moisture evaporate from the material;
  • The use of exclusively natural components in production makes the wallpaper environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic, which makes it suitable even for children's rooms. Flaxseed oil, which has disinfectant properties, protects the surface of the canvas from bacteria, mold and mildew;
  • The composition of the wallpaper allows the walls to breathe, which means the microclimate of the room is not disturbed;
  • Over time, Linkrusta will only become stronger, so that many generations will admire the beauty of the interior;
  • The deepest embossing of the surface allows the canvas to be repainted many times. Household damage can be easily restored with putty;
  • The choice of patterns and sizes of canvases is wide and varied. Linkrusta can be used as wallpaper, panels, frieze and borders.

But not everything is so perfect. Like everything in this world, canvases also have disadvantages:

  • High price compared to other elite materials;
  • Complex gluing process;
  • Intolerance to low temperatures (wallpaper becomes fragile).

But by paying once for Linkrust wallpaper, you can enjoy the unchanging quality of centuries-old traditions.

Linkrust installation - enjoying the wait

Linkrust canvases are sold in rolls, like regular wallpaper, but the gluing process is not simple. You can only trust it to professionals who know the installation instructions from A to Z.

  • The first stage of gluing involves careful preparation of the walls. They must be cleared of remnants of old repairs, leveled and plastered. The surface of the walls immediately before gluing must be dry, clean and smooth;
  • Wallpaper is cut on the floor due to the heaviness of the material. The material is cut to the required dimensions, leaving an allowance of 2-3 centimeters and following the relief pattern, then screwed into rolls and kept in hot water 10 minutes. Next, they are unwound, stacked (face up) and left overnight to further soften;
  • You can prepare the glue yourself using starch and office glue, or choose special glues. Coverings coated with glue are left to soak for 10 minutes. At this time, glue is applied to the walls;
  • Apply the canvas to the wall along a vertical line and level the surface. Wallpaper is glued end-to-end, pressing the edge of the canvas;
  • Such coatings should dry for several days without drafts.

Although the installation of Linkrust coatings is complicated, the beauty and elegance of the final result are worth the effort.

  • fabric-based materials are not soaked;
  • during soaking, the wallpaper expands by 2 cm and subsequently maintains this shape;
  • glue the canvas at a temperature of +15 degrees and above;
  • after gluing, baseboards and trim are installed, after the paint has dried, sockets and switches are installed;
  • To prevent the canvases from slipping, they are secured on top with nails. After drying, the holes are puttied and sanded;
  • paint the wallpaper with oil paint using decorative effects - gilding, platinum, metallic shine, craquelure;
  • walls covered with Linkrusta can be washed with a brush and mild detergents;

Due to its durability, this wallpaper can become a family heirloom. And although their cost is high, and their installation is unusual, they will turn your home into palace chambers, make the interior elegant, and the design unique.

Linkrust wallpaper has been on the market for about 140 years.

Wallpaper Linkrusta is embossed wall covering, reminiscent of stucco in the form of three-dimensional patterns

During this period, a lot has changed in the world of wall coverings, and this exclusive material was consigned to oblivion. Now it is experiencing a revival, and it can not only be seen at thematic exhibitions, but also purchased in specialized stores.

Chance played a decisive role in the appearance of these wallpapers. English chemist Frederick Walton converted the linseed oil-based paste from which linoleum flooring was made, and applied the still hot material to the paper web with an engraved roller - thus Linkrust wallpaper was born. New material in rolls appeared on the market in the last quarter of the 19th century and immediately gained enormous popularity. The coating originally had a natural color with embossed relief patterns, but now it looks much more impressive thanks to the application of glossy enamel.

Wallpaper Linkrusta - how to glue: photo

Note from the Encyclopedia of Building Materials

Linkrust (from Latin linum - linen and crusta - relief) is a decorative coating that was created in the second half of the 19th century. as an alternative to stucco. It is distinguished from ordinary wallpaper by both its high, clear and expressive relief and its composition: a mixture of wood flour, linseed oil, wax, chalk and rosin, applied to a paper or jute base.

Linkrust has many advantages, among which the most important are respectable appearance and durability. This beautiful covering decorates the halls of Buckingham Palace, the White House, luxury hotel rooms and luxury cabins of luxury yachts. Being relatively soft in the first few years, over time linkrust becomes stronger and harder, as the natural components included in its composition gradually turn to stone. The lifespan of the material is calculated in decades and even centuries. It is also important that walls covered with linkrust “breathe” perfectly. Moreover, the flaxseed oil it contains is a natural antiseptic that prevents the development of fungi and mold in conditions of high humidity. This means that this material can be used to decorate the walls of kitchens and even bathrooms (with the exception of “wet” areas).

Well, as for the disadvantages, these are the high price (from 17,000 rubles per roll) and the difficulty of gluing. We will dwell on it in more detail.

Linkrust is supplied in rolls 0.5 wide; 0.6; 0.75 and 0.9 m and a length of 10-12 m. During transportation and installation, the material must be handled very carefully. Before finishing begins, the walls should be cleaned, leveled and covered with alkyd primer (as recommended by the manufacturer). The wallpaper itself also needs to be prepared. They are cut taking into account the matching pattern, soaked in warm water for 10 minutes, and then spread face down and covered with film for 6-10 hours so that the canvases are saturated with moisture and become elastic. Afterwards, you can cut off the protective strips from the ends and begin gluing.

Since the weight of linkcrust can reach 2 kg/m2, it is necessary to use glue for heavy wallpaper. And if the height of the room exceeds 3 m, it is better not to glue the canvases, but to nail them with wallpaper nails, otherwise they may slide off. Often they are additionally fixed on top using thin wooden slats. The seams should be filled with oil-based putties - friendly to the linseed oil contained in the linkrust. If you use a water-soluble composition, there is a high probability that cracks will form in the seams over time.

The minimum drying time for wallpaper is 24 hours, but it is better not to disturb it for several days. After the glue has completely set and the canvases have dried and become hard, you can begin finishing - coating with protective and decorative compounds. These can be drying oil-based paints or acrylic enamels. There are a great many decor options. Wallpaper is painted to look like metal, wood, stone, plaster and ivory. And if the decoration gets boring or goes out of fashion, nothing prevents you from changing it. Linkrust lends itself well to restoration and can be painted countless times.

Pasting linkrusta does not cause any serious problems, so it can be done by anyone who has had to deal with wallpaper at least once. The surface is pre-prepared. By the time the material is applied, the trim, switches and sockets must be removed.

After removing the old coating, it is necessary to fill the cracks and uneven areas. Then the surface is sanded and coated with primer. After it dries, finishing putty and primer are applied. Next, the linkrust is cut into pieces of the required size.

After this, the canvases need to be rolled into small rolls and immersed for 10 minutes. into water whose temperature is about +50°C. The soaked sheets are removed from excess moisture and left for 8–10 hours until completely softened. During this time, the linkrust should shrink. Next, you need to trim the edges with a very sharp knife.

Linkrust wallpaper how to choose glue

When gluing linkrusta, starch paste is usually used, to which wood glue is added. Perchlorovinyl glue, for example Bustilat, is also suitable. The air temperature in the room should be above +15°C. Linkrusta sheets are covered with glue and then folded in half. In 10 minutes. You can proceed to applying them to the wall. Before fixing the first canvas, it is necessary to mark a strictly vertical line. The sheets must be joined at the corners. The fabrics should be ironed very tightly so that there are no wrinkles, bubbles or creases.

Each subsequent sheet must be glued end-to-end, pressing the edges firmly. Additionally, you can secure the upper part of the material to wooden glazing beads. If the work is done correctly, the joints should not be noticeable. It takes approximately 7 days for walls covered with linkrust to dry completely. After this, you can proceed to coloring them. It is done using oil or enamel paint. If cracks appear, you need to cover them with a semi-oil based putty.

It needs to be sanded and painted over. The trims should be nailed back into place before painting. Switches and sockets are installed only after the applied paint has completely dried. In order for the glue to dry evenly, constant conditions must be maintained in the room where the repair is being carried out. Drafts should also not be allowed to occur. Then the result of the work will be at the highest level.

It is very important that all surfaces are dry, clean and level. INSTALLATION .

LINCRUSTA Step one

- open it.

Cutting and adjusting the design when working with Lincrusta is always done on the editing table or on the floor. The reason is the weight of 1 sqm. material - more than 2 kg. The Lincrusta roll always has technological “tides” along the edges of the web, which protect the main web from damage during transportation.

1. Unwind the roll a little and check the angle between the end and sides of the web. If it is not equal to 90 degrees. - level.

2. Cut a strip from the roll 3-5 cm longer than the height of the ceiling. On the reverse side, use a pencil to put a serial number on the side where the top will be. Cut this and all subsequent strips from the main roll strictly along the square. Reason - Lincrusta is cut only on the floor. On the ceiling, the material is glued immediately end-to-end.

3. Find marker lines on the right and left sides of the strip and cut off the technological “tides” along them.

4. Unwind the second strip without cutting off the roll. Combine the pattern on both stripes. Cut the second strip from the roll, taking into account the shift when fitting and 3-5 cm for cutting along the floor. If necessary, align the length of the second strip with the length of the first. Mark the lane. Cut off technological tides. The remaining strips are cut in the same way. Step two

1. Place the first and second strips face down. Wet the back side of the canvas with warm water. You can moisten it quite generously. You will not take more material than you need. Fold the strips evenly, base to base, and leave for 20-30 minutes to swell. As a result of swelling, the material will expand by 1-2 cm and become more plastic. When dried, the linear dimensions will no longer change.

2. Unstick the strips and remove any remaining moisture from the base.

3. Apply glue to the first strip and stick it plumb.

4. Do the same with the second strip, aligning the pattern if necessary.

Align the strips with the floor.

The remaining strips are glued in the same way.

The drying time for the material on the wall is 24 hours.

Problems:

1. Lincrusta in internal and external corners is joined by cutting. Quality comes with experience. The joints are puttied and sanded.

2. Due to the heavy weight - more than 2 kg/sq.m. - with a canvas height of more than 2 meters, it may begin to “slide” to the floor. It requires fastening in several places with thin nails or “strong” buttons. After drying, the fasteners are removed, the holes are puttied and sanded.

3. It is impossible to trim technological “tides” perfectly evenly. Hence the joints.

The joints are also puttied and sanded.

When painting and decorating, the putty areas become invisible.

DECORATION INSTALLATION .

Lincrusta is a very “grateful” material and the possibilities of coloring and decorating it are limited only by our capabilities and imagination.

Paints.

Considering that Lincrusta contains linseed oil, not all paints are suitable for it. So, after 1-2 months it begins to peel off and fall off water-based paint. Waterborne paints simply do not adhere to Lincrusta surfaces. The manufacturer recommends using oil paints based on natural drying oil for decoration so as not to disturb the environmental purity of the product. You can also use acrylic enamels on a synthetic base.

Installation of Lincrusta wall covering is possible for anyone who knows how to handle wallpaper. The material is glued to prepared surfaces using special glue.
2-5. Lincrusta painting begins no earlier than 24 hours after gluing. For this purpose, oil paints or acrylic enamels are used. If necessary, the surface is first cleaned of contamination with white spirit. Then it is carefully painted over with a brush or roller.
6. The coating is left for several hours to allow the paint layer to dry.
7, 8. The upper edges of the relief are painted, for example, with silver wax paste (it is widely used for finishing moldings, frames or furniture), evenly rubbing it into the surface with a finger or a piece of cloth.
9, 10. After some time, the paint coating becomes very durable and allows for wet cleaning.
