Many people who have decided to renovate their apartment with their own hands are faced with the question of how to update old interior doors. The easiest way is to replace them with new ones. But, as a rule, in Russian apartments the doors are made of solid wood. Therefore, purchasing a similar model will be quite expensive.

You can decorate old interior doors with a simple design acrylic paints.

Even a novice craftsman can repair an old interior door. At the same time, you can think over its future design and decor yourself. And then the doors will not only look updated, but will also become a real “highlight” of your interior. You just need to show a little imagination and be patient.

Carrying out preliminary work

Old doors can be updated with regular painting.

Before you update an old interior door, you should carefully consider its future appearance. It should depend not only on your taste and preferences, but also on the design of the room as a whole. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the interior of both rooms.

Some designers use doors as a unifying element for 2 different decors. Then the sash should contain details that can be combined with both one and the other interior. It can be a mixed bag. It is permissible to decorate the interior door so that each side is decorated in its own style.

But in any case, you first need to choose the method by which you want to update your interior doors. On this moment There are the following techniques that allow you to restore a door with your own hands:

  1. Changing the door covering. This can be painting, decorating with self-adhesive or laminating film, veneering, finishing using stencils.
  2. Changing the sash facade.
  3. Restoring a door while simultaneously changing its shape.

Door leaf design.

All these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. But before you settle on one method or another, carefully examine the design of the valves itself. As a rule, wooden doors were made no earlier than 15-20 years ago.

Changing the shape of such a door is quite difficult. And if you do not have sufficient woodworking skills, then you should turn to professionals. If the structure is older, then it can be made of a solid wood panel. Such doors are much simpler and easier to modify. But most often it is enough just to update old interior doors and eliminate minor defects. And your apartment will look neat and updated.

Required tools and materials

Whatever restoration method you choose, before you undertake the restoration of the door, you need to carefully prepare it. To do this you will need the following tools:

  • grinder (or special nozzle on a drill);
  • construction hair dryer;
  • plane;
  • a set of spatulas (metal and rubber);
  • a set of sandpaper of varying degrees of grit.

To restore the door you will need a grinding machine.

A hair dryer works well when removing an old layer of oil paint. The coating softens under the influence of temperature and is easily removed with a spatula. If you do not have such equipment, you can use by special means designed for removing paint. But they must be handled with extreme caution, as the aggressive solution can damage the old door.

To repair large chips and cracks, you will need wood putty. If in the future you are going to completely renew the outer covering of the door, then it is not necessary to select a product that matches the color of the wood. Otherwise, you can purchase a special color that will help achieve the desired shade.

Epoxy glue can be used to remove small cracks. But you need to pour it in very carefully. Make sure that it does not get on the canvas itself. Otherwise, the paint in this place will lie unevenly. In addition, in modern stores you can find special waxes for removing minor defects. They are much easier to use, and they hide small chips more reliably.

Restoration of the door leaf

To carry out restoration work, remove the door from its hinges, dismantle the handles and locks, and remove the glass (if any). If you are repairing old interior doors, then it would be useful to remove the trim and assess the condition door frame. Replace if necessary wooden elements racks and supports.

Carefully remove the old coat of paint and sand the cloth down to bare wood.

The surface must be smooth and even, otherwise you will not be able to achieve an even coating.

To restore the door, you need to remove them from the hinges and remove all the fittings.

After each processing stage, clean the canvas from dirt, dust and grease. To do this, use dry or slightly damp rags and brushes. Don't get the door wet! And be sure to let it dry completely after each stage of restoration.

Soak the interior door with antiseptic. This measure will help the sash last for another dozen years. Treat chips and cracks. If the interior door consists of several elements joined together, check the reliability of the connection. Glue the fasteners and tighten them with clamps until completely dry.

Next, the canvas is covered with another 1 layer of antiseptic (or drying oil) and primed. The primer is also applied in 2 layers. Now the sash is completely ready for finishing. Further work depends entirely on which decoration method you have chosen.

If the door surface is good condition, then you can not paint it, but cover it with stain. This composition will emphasize the structure of the wood and give the sash a classic, noble look. Moreover, you can choose a composition containing coloring pigments. Then the surface will imitate expensive types of wood: walnut, oak, beech and the like.

Door frame design.

Recently it has become fashionable to leave old wood in its natural form. In this case, the surface is varnished. In this case, you can choose a composition with a tinting, slightly golden effect. Visually, the surface of the door will not change, but the unpleasant grayish tint will disappear. If the door leaf is treated with stain, then it is also varnished. Then the door acquires a pleasant glossy shine. If you prefer the look of natural wood, finish the repair with polishing wax. This coating will protect the sash from moisture.

Do-it-yourself door restoration allows you to update your interior without investment. Doors made from solid wood are especially easy to restore. In fact, there are many ways to update a door, returning it to its attractive appearance. Restoration of doors can be carried out efficiently with your own hands, but for this you need to properly carry out the preparatory work.

DIY restoration of old interior doors

With prolonged use, many defects appear on interior doors. The most common breakdowns include:

  • damage and falling off of platbands;
  • cracks;
  • fractures;
  • detachment;
  • mashing;
  • breakdown of fittings;
  • peeling off the panel;
  • broken glass;
  • creak.

The most difficult to correct is the curvature of the multilayer fabric. Such a defect often appears due to the material being saturated with water. In addition, a similar problem may arise as a result of technical irregularities during production. Doors made of fiberboard and MDF often suffer from such a defect. It is not always possible to restore a door made of these materials in the presence of severe deformation and delamination.

In some cases, it is much easier to make an effort and update interior doors than to change them. Restoration should be carried out if:

  • non-standard sizes;
  • there is a risk of damage to the wall cladding and the integrity of the opening;
  • there is an ornament and texture of the canvas;
  • there are no fatal defects.

You should not try to refresh the appearance of interior doors if their leaf or frame is severely cracked, dry, or the integrity of the structure has been compromised. If there are severe deformations and distortions of the elements, restoration is impossible. Doors made from such cheap materials as MFD, chipboard, etc. are difficult to restore. If delamination or swelling of the canvas occurs due to the influence of moisture, it will not be possible to eliminate such defects. Restoring veneer doors is especially problematic.

Preparing for recovery

Before proceeding directly to the restoration, you should prepare the tools and materials that may be required during the work. These include:

Kit necessary tools depends on the nature of the existing defects. To renew a wooden door, it is often necessary to carry out more work than planned because many defects cannot be hidden with paint. To improve the decorative characteristics, you can use vinyl stickers, photo wallpapers, stencils, overhead facades and other materials.

We remove the canvas from the hinges, free it from the handle and awnings

To facilitate restoration work, it is advisable to remove the canvas from its hinges and place it on a flat horizontal surface. Removing the canvas is not difficult, but it is advisable to use the help of another person who can support the canvas if necessary. If the hinges are not painted, you can remove the retaining pins from them.

However, if the hinges have been painted many times or are designed in such a way that the retaining pins cannot be removed, another method may be used. First, the paint is removed from the loops where they are attached to the luda. After this, to remove the canvas, you should open and unscrew all the screws securing the hinges.

The removed canvas must be placed on a flat surface and the places where the handles are attached with self-tapping screws must be freed from paint. They need to be unscrewed. If the hinges and handles that have already been unscrewed are not removed after removing the screws, the problem may be due to adhered paint. In this case, you can use a chisel and a hammer.

Disassembling a paneled door leaf

Most types of doors have a paneled structure, that is, their leaf includes frames, crossbars, inserts of shaped elements or glass. Such inserts complicate the repair process. To improve old interior doors of this type, you often have to completely disassemble them.

First you need to inspect the canvas and identify the location of the tongues connecting the individual elements. In most cases, they are located at the corners of the jumpers. After this, the tongues should be drilled out with a drill. To separate structural elements, it is better to use a wooden mallet. After this, work is carried out to restore individual elements. In some cases, you can do without parsing.

Restoring the geometry of the canvas and strengthening it

When the question arises of how to restore an old door, you need to pay attention to the preservation of its correct geometric parameters, since wood can swell during operation due to exposure to moisture. Poor closure may indicate such a problem. It is almost impossible to repair an MDF door that has been subjected to similar impacts. However, if the canvas is made of solid wood, it must be carefully planed from the ends.

Ways to remove old paint

To update wooden interior doors coated with varnish or paint, the decorative coating must be removed. Solvents are often used to remove old paint. A product such as B52 gives a good effect. Work should be carried out outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, as a couple of such chemicals are extremely toxic and can cause poisoning.

The process of removing old paint using solvents takes some time. To remove the coating Chemical substance applied to a small area. After the paint has softened, scrape it off with a metal spatula.

Before updating old doors with your own hands, you can use thermal treatment to remove the paintwork. Most often, a gas burner or a hair dryer is used for this purpose. Under the influence high temperatures the paint comes away from the wood and can later be easily removed with a spatula or scraper.

This method of removing layers of paint has its drawbacks. Often decorative material peels off unevenly, so additional thorough cleaning of the surface with sandpaper of varying degrees of abrasiveness is required.

In the presence of grinder it's best to use it. To carry out work on removing the old coating, it is best to take the canvas outside, since during this work there will be a lot of dust. Be sure to wear a protective mask and goggles.

If there are many layers of paint on the door, you should stock up on spare ones in advance. grinding wheels, because they quickly become cramped and clogged with dust. Bend areas and corners must be cleaned with a chisel and sanded. Using this method of cleaning wood, you can quickly achieve the desired result. After removing the protective paint layer, you need to sand the surface.

Glass replacement

Glass is replaced not only if it is damaged, but also when you want to update old interior doors. This stage of restoration has its own characteristics. It is easier to replace glass if they are fixed with glazing beads. They can be picked up with a spatula.

After this, you need to remove the nails with pliers. After removing the glass, you need to clean the bed with a knife and spatula. After this, measurements are taken. The glass should be 0.3 mm smaller than the frame. If desired, you can use an acrylic unbreakable mirror. You can insert both matte and clear glass. The opening must be treated with sealant. After this, the glass is inserted. It is fixed with glazing beads. Thin nails are used for fastening.

Door putty

The final stage of preparing the door for decoration is its putty. It allows you to eliminate existing irregularities and defects. To eliminate chips and cracks that often plague old wooden doors, you need to apply a small amount of diluted wood putty to a spatula, apply to the surface and leave to dry. If there are deep defects, you can repair them with a mixture of sawdust and wood glue.

It is advisable to fill large cracks with wood chips selected to size and treated with wood glue. This method of eliminating chips and cracks is difficult to perform, so it should not be used if you lack the skills. You need to let the putty and wood glue dry. The finished surface is carefully sanded with sandpaper. After this, you need to apply a primer and let it dry.

Designer decoration of old doors

There are many ways to update doors without changing them, allowing you to make its surface original. When decorating doors you can use different materials and improvised means. Door design is especially important for people who want to personalize the interior of their home.

Decorating a door with fabrics

Updating doors with fabric allows you to completely change its appearance. When decorating, you can use both plain pieces of fabric and small scraps of different colors. It is better to glue the fabric using Bustilat mastic. The composition should be applied to a piece of fabric and then glued to the surface. After this, it must be carefully leveled with a spatula. Additionally, you can glue sparkles, cords or baguette frames.

Decorating doors using decoupage technique

The decoupage technique can also be used to decorate doors. During the work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • acrylic lacquer;
  • napkins with a pattern;
  • PVA glue;
  • brush with natural bristles.

The canvas must first be coated with a primer and painted in the desired color. The napkins should be layered, separating the top layer with the pattern. After this, you need to tear it lengthwise into 3 parts. After this, they need to be glued to the surface of the PVA door. Gradually, the entire surface to be decorated is filled with napkins. After about a day, the drawing is opened with acrylic varnish.

Decorating a door with self-adhesive film

A simple method of updating doors is to use self-adhesive film. During the work you will need the following materials and tools:

  • sharp knife;
  • film;
  • spray bottle with soapy water;
  • soft cloth.

The self-adhesive film can only be attached to a clean, flat surface. After this, you need to spray the surface with water using a spray bottle. The protective layer should be removed from one corner of the film and glued. After this, gradually removing the protective part, you need to glue it across the entire width. In this case, you need to run a soft cloth over the surface to expel the air from under the film. When the top is glued, you need to gradually remove the protective shell and move down. Thus, you need to slowly tape the door with film to the very bottom.

Children's drawings, art painting

You can effectively decorate the door with children's drawings. If there are children in the house, you can ask them to draw pictures of any theme on the door leaf with acrylic paints. After this, the surface is opened with varnish on water based. In addition, you can independently paint the surface with drawings of any complexity.

Lamination

There is a special laminate plastic available for lamination. It is glued to the base using a cold method. The only drawback of this method is the high cost of the laminate.

Wallpaper with moldings, photo wallpaper

Often, to update interior doors, wallpaper with moldings and photo wallpaper are used, on which, thanks to available technologies, three-dimensional images can be applied to special paper. It is not difficult to cover a simple canvas with photo wallpaper. First you need to apply glue to the canvas. After this, the photo wallpaper begins to stick from top to bottom. Bubbles must be removed with a rubber roller. The edges are trimmed with a wallpaper knife. You need to wait for the wallpaper to dry.

Painting, varnishing and staining

Often, when a door is being restored, preference is given to varnishes and paints. Before starting painting, it is necessary to seal the existing glass inserts with masking tape. It is better to use paint specifically designed for wood. It can be applied either with a spray gun or with a brush, making movements along the wood fibers. The painting process is carried out in 2 stages. First, a basic white coat of paint is applied. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that there are no leaks. The second layer is a tinting layer, so it can be any color.

If during the preparation process it was not necessary to seal large cracks, which entails the appearance of visible defects, you can use transparent varnishes, which will highlight the color and structure of the wood pattern. Before painting, the wood should be treated with stain. To renew old wooden doors with your own hands, the varnish can be applied either with a brush or with a spray gun. There should be no leaks. Often it is necessary to apply several layers of varnish. The stain is applied in a similar way.

Stencil painting

Using stencils, you can achieve a good decorative effect. First you need to paint the canvas in the desired color. After the base layer has dried, pre-prepared stencils of designs are attached to the surface. After this, the empty areas in the stencils are painted over. You need to make sure that the paint does not spread. Stencils can be removed after the paint has dried.

Veneering, door stickers

If desired, you can carry out veneering yourself with a special film. It is best to work together. First, the film should be fixed on the surface and then ironed with a hot iron. Water will adhere tightly to the surface under the influence of heat. When attaching the film, you need to make sure that there are no bubbles under it. There are special door stickers on sale that can be fixed using both hot and cold methods.

Let's look at some of the simplest ways to decorate interior doors with your own hands using scrap materials.

As you know, doors do not last forever, and anything can happen. For example, scratches, chips, and cracks often appear on the door leaf. In this case, you can repair, replace or carefully decorate, hiding all defects.

Wallpapering the door

To decorate a door, you can use not only paper, vinyl and non-woven wallpaper, but also fabric or liquid.

In this case, the canvas should be prepared by removing a layer of paint in advance, filling up uneven areas, cracks and sanding the surface.

A layer of applied primer will provide additional adhesion of the wallpaper to the surface of the door.

You can wallpaper both the entire canvas and the panels by cutting out pieces of wallpaper of a suitable size. Don't forget to choose an adhesive that matches the type of wallpaper and dilute it according to the instructions.

Wallpaper classic

Lubricate the cut wallpaper with glue and apply it to the door, making sure that there are no jams or distortions. Smooth the wallpaper with a soft cloth, roller or wide plastic spatula. Carefully trim off the excess with a utility knife. Additionally, you can decorate it by gluing a frame made of foam plinth on top of the wallpaper.

While the wallpaper is drying, it is advisable to close the windows in the house and prevent the appearance of drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Textile

A door decorated with fabric looks very unusual and attractive. In addition to standard surface preparation, attention should be paid to the fabric itself, determining the degree of shrinkage.

We cut off a small piece of fabric, measure its dimensions, moisten it with water and dry it. After drying, we take measurements again, comparing the readings and finding out the degree of shrinkage. If the value is large, then the entire piece of fabric is also moistened and left to dry before decorating.

Note! You can use not only a single piece of fabric, but also cut pieces of different colors and textures. This technique is called “patchwork” and is often used by designers in interior design.

For fabric, casein glue, a composition based on CMC, as well as Bustilat or Gumilax mastics are best suited. Apply the adhesive to the fabric and apply it to the door, smoothing it with a spatula. When covering a door with fragments, it is important to ensure that they are geometric, otherwise the work will look sloppy.

Additionally, you can decorate the door with beautiful furniture nails, shiny nylon or leather cords, fabric paint, and baguette frames.

- universal. They cover not only walls, but also doors, creating unimaginable patterns and compositions. In this case, you don’t have to bother with cutting the canvases. However, the door cannot be exposed to moisture. Therefore, this method is unacceptable for decorating a door in a bathroom or kitchen.

To work you will need a dry wallpaper mixture and several spatulas. different sizes, hopper gun, roller, clear varnish, color.

Decorate the door with a mirror

A very unusual door decoration can be made using mirrors. Such decor will not only attract everyone’s attention, but will also visually expand the space of the room and add light. However, cutting and attaching a classic glass mirror is very inconvenient, fortunately there is an alternative - acrylic panels with amalgam, which has excellent reflectivity.

Acrylic mirrors are available in a wide range color scheme. You can choose any shade you like or several to make a mirror panel. Plastic panels do not break, are easy to process and attach to the door, and are light in weight. Price mirror plexiglass not the lowest, but the quality and aesthetic qualities fully correspond to the stated prices.

Before attaching the mirror plastic to the surface, you should carefully level the surface by deepening the heads of the nails, sanding off and covering with putty all the irregularities/recesses.

On the door and the back side of the acrylic sheet in mandatory A deep penetration primer is applied. After it dries, the cut panels are secured with double-sided tape and mounting adhesive. For convenience, use mounting suction cups; with their help, it is much easier to carefully glue the panels to the door leaf.

As one of the decoration options, you can consider shaped acrylic mirrors. Such a mirror can be attached in the center of the door or you can purchase several elements and arrange them beautifully. Usually small parts are produced with an adhesive layer already applied.

Even from this simple material, How buckwheat husk, excellent work is obtained. The cost of the material is minimal, but the service life of such a coating, unfortunately, cannot be called too long.

Step 1. Remove the layer of old paint and existing vinyl covering from the door, and remove all unevenness with putty.

Step 2. Remove the door from its hinges and place it on the floor/stools/table. We paint the door leaf with dark brown paint. If the door has glass inserts, protect them with masking tape.

Step 3. Thickly coat the dried door with PVA glue, lay out the husks, distributing them with your hands. If necessary, add small gold sparkles.

Step 4. Cover the door with transparent varnish (glossy or matte). It is advisable to apply three layers in order to properly fix the buckwheat on the door leaf.

The beautiful door is ready. To prevent the door from being knocked out general design room, decorate the picture frame in the same way and place the creation on one of the walls.

Draw a rectangular or square activity field on the door with a pencil. Lubricate the outlined areas with PVA glue. Immediately lay out the paper chaotically, smoothing it with your hands. Apply clear varnish in two layers on top.

Step 4. Along the perimeter of the areas covered with paper, we attach a black baguette with mounting glue.

The need to update interior and entrance doors occurs for everyone. There are two ways to solve the problem: purchase new ones or. The second one is quite possible to implement without turning to specialists. In order to need to think over the design, how to implement the idea, familiarize yourself with the work order, stock up necessary materials and make your plans come true.

Thinking through the design

There are many ways, the choice of which largely depends on what material it is made of: wood, chipboard, MDF, veneered or with glass inserts. It can be:

  • paint completely or partially by applying a design
  • varnish, treat with stain, tint;
  • veneer;
  • cover the door with wallpaper, its fragments, vinyl stickers;
  • decorate with moldings;
  • apply aging varnish (craquelure method);
  • insert glass, including painted, frosted, corrugated.

As a result, the cheapest doors can become an exclusive designer product.

Getting ready to implement the project

To remake old doors, you will need the following tools:

  • a screwdriver or a universal screwdriver - for dismantling and opening, hanging and adjusting hinges and handles;
  • spatula, construction knife - for stripping the surface of old paint;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw - for cutting openings in the door if the project provides for the insertion of glass or a sheet of plywood;
  • sandpaper (ideally a sander) - for cleaning surfaces and edges;
  • brushes (flat), rollers (foam rubber or fine-pile velor), rags, sponges - for applying primer and painting;
  • self-tapping screws, wallpaper nails - fasteners;
  • glazing beads and wooden slats– if it is necessary to secure glass or plywood inserts into the canvas.

The material for alteration is selected for each specific case individually. Restoring old interior doors begins with dismantling them and preparing the base:

  1. Prepare a place for work - a horizontal surface sufficient to place the door leaf on it and covered with a non-rigid material.
  2. remove the hinges from the opening, place them on the prepared surface, unscrew the fittings - handles, hinges, locks and latches.
  3. If the interior door has glass and you plan to replace it, then it must be carefully removed, after loosening the glazing beads.
  4. Clean the surface of the old coating and decorative elements - a layer of paint, glass inserts, a cracked layer of veneer, etc.
  5. Sand with sandpaper and remove small particles.
  6. Degrease and prime the surface, wait until dry. If there are no visible major defects on the canvas, then the door is ready for finishing.

Repairing small dents and large holes

If the doors are very old or have been subjected to impacts that have left holes and dents on the surface, then they need to be restored. The damage is filled with special wax or putty, which subsequently hardens. To work you need:

  • hard furniture wax, matched to match the color;
  • soft wax;
  • retouching felt-tip pen;
  • soldering iron or special gas wax melter;
  • lint-free microfiber cloth;
  • fixing varnish.

The order of restoration work:

  1. Trim the edges of the damage along the contour, trimming them.
  2. Fill the dent with hard wax, melt it with a soldering iron and pour it into the recess. Wait until it hardens, remove excess with a knife to level the wax with the surface.
  3. Retouch the color with soft wax and a thin felt-tip pen.
  4. Secure the result with varnish.

It is not necessary to retouch the defect to match the color of the surface if the restored area is planned to be sealed or painted in the future.

If the hole is of impressive size, then wood putty is used instead of hard wax.

For through holes in a hollow door leaf, the restoration process is as follows:

  1. Trim the edges of the pothole, giving the edge a smooth shape.
  2. Fill the hole with soft paper around the edges - a kind of foam limiter, which is filled in at the next stage.
  3. Blow polyurethane foam into the hole.
  4. After waiting for hardening, cut off the excess.
  5. Putty the surface of the foam and the door, leveling it with a spatula.
  6. Clean the surface with sandpaper.
  7. Primed, painted.

Decoration methods: Painting

The most common way to transform an old door is to paint it. It is important not to make a mistake with the choice of color - unsuccessful painting will only emphasize that the outdated door needs to be replaced. The color is chosen to match the walls or in contrast.

Painting is carried out on a previously prepared (cleaned, primed) surface. Work with a brush or roller. As a rule, paint is applied in 2 layers: the surface is covered with the second after the first has dried. The following types of paints are acceptable for use for these purposes:

Acrylic. Eco-friendly, water-based. They are dissolved in water, which evaporates when dried, leaving insoluble resins, so the paint is not washed off in the future, and the surface can be washed.

Oily. Popular in the past, durable and scratch-resistant, these paints have somewhat lost their relevance. They take a long time to dry - at least 24 hours, and are toxic in liquid form. Dissolved with drying oil.

Alkyd. Waterproof enamels, resistant to solvents after drying. Dissolve with white spirit or solvent. They also take a long time to dry – a day. A common group of alkyd enamels is PF-115.

Advice. If, when restoring doors, the choice fell on painting them with alkyd enamel, then it is not recommended to use a foam roller for the job, since it melts under the influence of solvents and forms lumps on the surface. It is better to use a velor nozzle or a fur one with a small pile.

Nitro enamels. They dry quickly - about 1 hour, but their pungent odor can last up to several days. Suitable for use on wood, chipboard, MDF, plywood. The solvent used is acetone.

Drawing

The painted surface can be decorated by applying a design. The easiest way is the screen printing method.

  1. Print out a sample of the drawing you like.
  2. Placed on more durable material(for example, a thick plastic blank), cut along the contour.
  3. Attach the stencil to the door using tape.
  4. Apply paint to the open part of the stencil (with a brush, sponge, or use a can of paint), making sure that it does not get under it in unintended places.
  5. When the paint dries, remove the stencil.

A variant of screen printing is the “anti-stencil” technology, when a cut-out design is placed on a surface and the area around it is painted.

An original solution could be a decor with a geometric pattern, which can be easily applied using paint or vinyl stickers: rhombuses, stripes, triangles, herringbones, polka dots and simply contrasting lines give the canvas an extraordinary effect.

Tinting

The real ones are high, and a layer of paint hides their true dignity. A sure way to improve the interior is to tint a wooden door. Toning is the treatment of wood with compounds (oils or resins) that preserve the appearance of the texture and fibers, but give them a rich color. If the door was previously painted, you will need to remove the top layer and sand the wood:

  1. Take off old paint from the surface. This can be done mechanically(with a spatula) or chemically (special compounds).
  2. Sand with medium-grit sandpaper or a sander.
  3. Tint using stain or varnish.
  4. It is not recommended to apply stain with a brush; it is better to make a swab from a rag, dip it in the stain, and squeeze it onto a rough sheet of cardboard. Wooden surface tint with light circular movements, avoiding abundant pinpoint stains on the canvas.

The varnish is applied evenly with a brush. Tinting is used not only for, but in this way you can refine the front door.

Glass processing

Interior doors with glass – modern trend. To update the glass, you need to take out the old transparent glass and insert a more current sample: matte, with a pattern, photo printing, corrugated, colored. If the door leaf is solid, you will first have to cut out the opening and then glaze it. Installation instructions:

  1. Mark the place on the canvas.
  2. Drill a hole of about 1 cm in the corner of the marking so that the jigsaw can fit into it.
  3. Cut the opening.
  4. Make grooves around the perimeter for the glass or nail slats that will hold it.

To insert glass, you must:

  1. Measure the opening in the door leaf that is being prepared for glazing.
  2. Cut the glass, taking into account that it should “sit” in the opening, entering approximately 0.5 cm on each side. To work you will need a glass cutter and a metal ruler.
  3. Secure with glazing beads, driving wallpaper nails into them or screwing in small screws.

Restoration, renovation and decorative design interior doors is a creative process that brings positive emotions and satisfaction. The interior is transformed with at the lowest cost, and in some cases an exclusive product is created.

Replacing old doors with new ones is quite expensive, since interior doors to the toilet and bathroom are mostly made in the same style, that is, if they are replaced, then all at once.

Therefore, we offer 4 master classes on how to update wooden doors with your own hands with photos and detailed instructions. And not just paint, but implement interesting design solutions!

The simplest and easiest method of updating is to make beautiful geometric door stickers. To do this, you will need a self-adhesive film, preferably contrasting with the color of the door.

  1. Make a preliminary marking of the pattern on the surface with a pencil.
  2. Apply the film and press and rub the air under the film with a rag.
  3. This method does not require removing the door leaf from its hinges; it can also be done in a vertical position.

ATTENTION: Just please do not completely cover the doors with wood-grain film! It looks terrible and old fashioned! It’s better to take a plain film and geometry.

You can cover the doors with a one-color film for chalk drawing; it is not cheap, but it looks impressive. And change the inscriptions every day!

Painting wooden doors

Also, this method is not labor-intensive and requires minimal costs! You can paint your interior doors in absolutely any color! Here we will discuss in detail how to do this. But Painting requires removal of the doors with hinges.

What kind of paint do we use:

  • Any for interior and interior woodwork, water and acrylic based— it is absolutely odorless! Alkyd paint is of no use to you!
  • Take matte, not glossy. Glyantseva will highlight all the irregularities on your surface.
  • Paint in a can is dangerous because if you are painting for the first time, you are unlikely to paint it evenly!! Also, if you are planning to paint directly in the apartment, keep in mind that it “flies” in all directions. Therefore, it is better for beginners to start with regular paint and a roller.

What we paint and the technique for painting a door:

  • Solid and smooth doors - only wide roller! We paint in 2-3 layers with a very thin coating.
  • If the doors have panels, then first we paint all the recesses with a thin brush, and then we do a full coating with a roller.

Door with overlay strips

A door with embossed overlays looks much more original and interesting than a regular flat one. Making such changes is quite simple and does not take much time. In terms of money, the cost will be only a little more than just painting, and much cheaper than buying a new door.

Necessary materials:

  • Door
    Overlay wooden planks
    Roulette
    Long ruler and construction angle
    Pencil
    Saw
  • Miter box
    Liquid nails or other wood glue
    Scotch
  • Paint (white here)
    Building level(not necessary, but very helpful for checking how evenly you are installing the trim strips)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: Paint the door. First you need to repaint the old wooden door in the chosen color, in this case white. Leave to dry.

On top of the dried paint you need to mark the fastening of the overhead wooden planks. To do this, draw lines with a pencil (without pressing it too hard) and a ruler, to get perpendicular lines, use a construction corner.

In this case, the drawing consists of two rectangles located one above the other.

  • In the photo below you can see all the calculations that show how much to retreat: 5" (about 13 cm) everywhere except the bottom of the door, where the distance from the edge to the line is 6" (about 15 cm).
  • You can make other indentations, depending on the size of the door (for example, if you decide to update the cabinet doors in the same way, you need to indent clearly less).

Step 3: Cut out the strips

Now you need to cut the strips of the appropriate size (measure the length of the outlined lines). If you don't have the necessary tools at home, this can be done directly at a hardware store for a small additional fee. If you do it yourself, you will need not only a saw, but also a miter box to cut out the ends of the planks are at an angle of 45 degrees.

Step 4: Attach the planks

Place all the planks on the marked lines. Make sure they are all the right length and meet evenly at the corners.

  1. Now lift each plank in turn, apply glue to it and put it back in place. If excess glue suddenly leaks out from under the plank, you can remove it with a damp paper towel.
  2. Glue must dry for about 24 hours. To ensure that the planks stick evenly and reliably, attach them with tape while drying, fixing the position and pressing down.
  3. A larger amount of tape ensures secure fastening.

Note: you can glue already painted planks, or glue and then paint; You can also not paint the door at first (skip step 1), but do it together with the glued strips.

Step 5: Install the door

After the glue has dried, you need to carefully peel the tape off the door; it is better to use masking tape that does not leave marks.

Now all that remains is to put the remodeled door in place and attach the handle. And everything is ready!

Door with overlay panels

This master class differs from the previous one in that here we will not only attach the planks, but also fill the inside of the doors has overlay panels.

Necessary materials:

  • Plastic panels (we make these here, but wooden panels can also be used)
  • Roulette
  • Pencil
  • Building level
  • Construction adhesive
  • Latex paint
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Hand saw
  • Screws
  • Safety glasses and earmuffs
  • Putty for plastic
  • Putty knife
  • Sander (or sandpaper)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: Correct the door defects. If the door is very old and has some defects that cannot be hidden by painting (for example, the top coating has chipped off in places, or there are deep scratches), then initially you need to remove them and make the surface smooth.

  • To do this, apply wood putty and let it dry,
  • then level it surface grinding machine go sandpaper.

Step 2: Outlining the location of the planks

We will do the marking here the same as in the previous case, that is, we will retreat 5" (about 13 cm) everywhere except the bottom of the door, where we leave 6" (about 15 cm).

ADVICE: If there is no long ruler, lines can be drawn using a building level.

Step 3: Attach the panel

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the plastic panels.

Place the panels on the door and check that they are positioned correctly using a level. The sides of the panels should be clearly parallel to the edges of the door.

Press down on the panel until it presses firmly against the door and sticks securely. Secure this entire structure around the perimeter with small screws using a screwdriver.

Step 4: Attach the planks

Again, you can either cut the planks to size at a shop, or do it yourself using a saw and miter box. The strips should surround the panels around the perimeter, fitting tightly to them.

Note: The planks can initially be glued with construction adhesive and then secured with screws.

This is what should happen at this stage:

Step 5: Paint the door. Now all that remains is to paint the door and leave it until completely dry.

Now compare the door before and after repair:

The applied relief makes the door more stylish and affects the appearance of the entire room as a whole:

Don't be afraid to change up old items and give them a different look. Give them the opportunity to serve you again, but in a new guise!
