brief information

Kazan is the “third capital of Russia”. Kazan is located on the left bank of the Volga River. One of the largest economic, political, scientific and cultural centers of Russia.

According to the official version currently accepted, the city was founded at least 1000 years ago. Kazan was founded as a border fortress of the Volga Bulgaria state. In the XIII-XIV centuries, Kazan was an important trade and political center as part of the Golden Horde, and from 1438 it became the capital of the Kazan Khanate. Kazan has always been a trade intermediary between East and West and today plays an increasingly important role in political, economic and international relations.

Orthodox Kazan has its origins in 1555 with the establishment of the Kazan diocese by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The Kazan high priests, Saints Guria, Herman and Barsanuphius, received truly apostolic work. The land, acquired by force of arms, had to submit to spiritual weapons.
For the last five centuries, two religions have flourished peacefully in the capital of Tatarstan - Orthodoxy and Islam.
Orthodox shrines of Kazan: the holy relics of the high priests of Kazan Guria and Barsanuphius in the Church of the Yaroslavl Saints; the holy relics of High Hierarch Herman in the Sviyazhsk Dormition Monastery on Fr. Sviyazhsk; holy relics of St. Jonah and Nektarios, Kazan miracle workers, in the Cathedral of Sts. App. Peter and Paul; St. Ephraim, Metropolitan of Kazan, in the Cathedral of Sts. App. Peter and Paul; St. Epiphanius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, in the Cathedral of Sts. App. Peter and Paul; St. St. Gabriel of Sedmiezersk, the miracle worker, in the Sedmiezerskaya Hermitage.

Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery

The monastery arose on the site of a monastery founded by the monk of the Moscow Chudov Monastery, Philaret, who arrived in Kazan in 1613. In 1662, wooden churches were erected here, one of which gave the monastery its name.

After the fire in 1689, the builder Hieromonk German was invited from the New Jerusalem Monastery near Moscow, who headed construction works. The main features of the new stone ensemble of the monastery were formed in 1690-1717; in 1739 it included 15 churches, three two-story outbuildings, and a fence with five towers.

The miraculous Georgian icon of the Mother of God is kept in the monastery. In 1622, the Persian Shah Abbas conquered Georgia, seizing many shrines of the Georgian land for sale to Russian merchants visiting Persia. Among the many stolen items was Georgian icon of the Mother of God, decorated with silver and gold. For a long time The icon was in the Arkhangelsk region and during religious processions it was carried around the cities of Rus' for worship. Raifa Monastery website

Temple of Yaroslavl Wonderworkers at the Arskoe Cemetery- a temple in the name of the holy noble princes Theodore, David and Constantine, Yaroslavl wonderworkers. It was built in 1796. Stored here relics of Saint Gurias- the first bishop of Kazan and the miraculous list Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan KremlinOrthodox church and an outstanding monument of Russian architecture of the 16th century. Built in 1562 by the famous Pskov architect Postnik Yakovlev, traditionally considered the creator of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Since 1925, the cathedral was closed and transferred to the jurisdiction of the Republican State Archive, which was located in the cathedral until 1996. During restoration work, a monastic cell of St. Gury, the first baptist of Kazan, was found under the cathedral. Currently, the cell has been restored. The Annunciation Cathedral is also a necropolis, since all the archbishops of Kazan who died before the 1917 revolution are buried here. Unfortunately, not all burials have survived to this day.

Sviyazhsk Mother of God Assumption Monastery— located on the island of Sviyazhsk, 30 km from Kazan. Founded in 1555 simultaneously with the establishment of the Kazan diocese. The first rector (until 1564) was Archimandrite Herman, who later became Archbishop of Kazan (1564-1566) and canonized as Saint Herman, the Kazan Wonderworker. His relics have been the main shrine of the monastery since 1592, when they were transferred here from Moscow). On August 9, 1918, the last rector of the monastery, Bishop Ambrose (Gudko) of Sviyazhsk, was brutally killed without trial by the Red Army. The latter was glorified in 2000 at the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, but his burial place has not been found. The monastery was closed and looted. The relics of St. were opened and desecrated. Herman (to date, only a small part of them has survived, placed in a symbolic shrine). During Soviet times, the territory of the monastery was occupied by a psychiatric hospital.

In 1994, the hospital was withdrawn; in 1997 the monastery was officially revived. Sviyazhsk Monastery website

Sedmiozernaya Bogoroditskaya hermitage. In 1615, Schemamonk Evfimy, a native of Veliky Ustyug, settled in a deserted place. Soon, having learned about the ascetic life of the blessed elder Euthymius. Monks and novices began to settle next to it, and 10 years later a monastery was founded on this site. The main shrine of the monastery is the Smolensk-Sedmiozernaya Icon of the Mother of God. The founder of the desert, Schemamonk Evfimy, brought this icon, which was kept in the family of his parents from Veliky Ustyug. The miracles from this bright image of the Queen of Heaven glorified the monastery, where thousands of pilgrims from different places in Russia began to flock to Bogomolye every year.
Another glorious page in the history of the monastery is associated with the stay of St. Gabriel (Zyryanov), who at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century was one of the most famous elders in Russia. In 1997, Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel was canonized.

After its closure in 1926, the Sedmiozernaya Hermitage suffered much greater destruction. By the time the monastery was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church(in 1997) only the fraternal building, built in 1893, part of the walls with a hospice house and a two-story church in the name of St. Euthymius the Great and St. Tikhon of Zadonsk have survived. Restoration work is underway. Divine services are held daily.

Founded in 1613 by the monk Euthymius, who moved from Veliky Ustyug and brought here the icon of the Mother of God, which later received the name Smolensk Sedmiezernaya. The monastery was one of the richest in the Kazan diocese. From 1883 to 1908, Elder Gabriel (Zaryanov) lived in the monastery.

In 1928, the monastery was closed and destroyed, almost its entire ensemble, including the main cathedral and bell tower, was destroyed. In 1996, the territory of the monastery was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Of the churches of the monastery, only one small church of Saints Euthymius the Great and Tikhon of Zadonsk has survived and been restored.

Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin is the oldest historical and architectural monument preserved in Kazan. It was founded in October 1552 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The Annunciation Cathedral is a unique temple because it preserves part of the cathedral necropolis intact. The burials of five metropolitans and three archbishops have been preserved in the Annunciation Cathedral itself and the burials of two archbishops in the side church. Among other shrines of the Annunciation Cathedral is the ancient cell of Archbishop Guria, discovered in 1841 during the reconstruction of the Boris and Gleb chapel. In 1906, a chapel was built above this cell. During Soviet times, the chapel was used as a utility room for a janitor. However, during the reconstruction of the 1990s, the cell itself was discovered covered with bricks, as a result of which the ancient fresco was not damaged and has been preserved to this day.

Kazan-Bogoroditsky Monastery. Until 1917, the monastery was female, and since 2005 it became male. The monastery was built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1579 on the spot where the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God had previously been miraculously found. By the beginning of the 20th century, it was a vast architectural complex of buildings from different periods, a significant part of which, unfortunately, was destroyed in Soviet times. From the extensive complex of the monastery, a two-story building with the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, built in 1882-1887, and the Sophia Gate Church, which has been transferred to the Kazan diocese since 1993, have been preserved.

On July 21, 2005, the monastery was visited by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II and handed over miraculous "Vatican" list of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, installed in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross. Divine services are held daily in the temple and all believers have the opportunity to worship the Shrine.

Cathedral of the Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul- a real pearl of architectural monuments of the historical center of Kazan. The history of its construction is connected with the visit of Emperor Peter I to Kazan on his way to the Persian campaign. Arriving in the city on May 27, 1722, the emperor stayed in Mikhlyaev’s house. In memory of this event, Ivan Afanasyevich decided to build a stone two-story cathedral instead of a small wooden church. The foundation stone of the temple took place in 1723. The temple, at that time, was built very quickly, and already in 1726 its consecration took place.

Shrines of the temple:

  • miraculous Sedmiezernaya Icon of the Mother of God
  • relics of St. Jonah and Nektaria of Kazan
  • relics of Metropolitan Ephraim of Kazan.

Temple of Yaroslavl Wonderworkers at the Arskoe Cemetery in Kazan- one of the most revered and visited temples in Kazan. It was built in 1796.

Shrines of the temple:

  • relics of St. Gury Kazansky
  • miraculous list of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God
  • icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh

Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery - the only surviving monastery complex in Tatarstan, designed in the Baroque style and previous traditions of the 17th century. The founder of the monastery is considered to be the hermit Filaret, who became a monk after the death of his parents. He wandered around the cities for a long time until he found shelter in Kazan, in the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. Afterwards he built himself a small cell on the shore of the lake and began to live there as a hermit. However, soon his admirers began to come to Filaret and pray with him. Gradually everything more people remained on the shore, they built their cells and led an ascetic lifestyle with their ascetic. Over time, a chapel was built here, where everyone came to the service. After the death of Filaret, a monastery was founded on this blessed place, which they decided to name in honor of the saints who died in Raifa. This is how the Raifa Mother of God Monastery appeared.

Miraculous Georgian Icon of the Mother of God- shrine of the monastery. The history of this shrine is quite unusual. In 1622, she was kidnapped from Georgia by Shah Abbas and sold. Later, the icon ended up in the hands of the clerk Stefan Lazarev, the clerk of the merchant Yegor Lytkin. One night the merchant had a vision: he saw where this miraculous icon was located. He received orders to send her to the Krasnogorsk monastery of the Arkhangelsk diocese. Yegor Lytkin did everything as he was told in his dream. The icon was already famous for its miraculous properties. Later, the shrine was transported to the Raifa Monastery, where it is currently located.

On June 8, a pilgrimage trip of Sunday school directors and teachers to Kazan took place. It was headed by the head of the department of religious education and catechesis of the Vyksa diocese, Archpriest John Lyapin. +

42 of the most active Sunday school teachers were invited to the pilgrimage, for whom the trip became a gift at the end school year from Bishop Varnava of Vyksa and Pavlovsk. +

Pilgrims share their impressions:

In the morning we arrived in Kazan. The group was joined by guide Galia, Tatar by nationality and Orthodox by religion. Galia accompanied us until the evening, professionally and clearly introduced us to the diverse Kazan: Orthodox, national, historical, sports and nightlife. +

The trip program was very eventful. +

First of all we visited the main Orthodox monastery Kazan - Bogoroditsky men's, the place where the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Kazan" was found. In 1904, unfortunately, this image was lost, and currently the Vatican copy of the icon is located in the monastery. The capital of Tatarstan received this miraculous list 10 years ago, on July 21, 2005, on the day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. With a feeling of love, reverence and veneration, we venerated this famous icon and became acquainted with the history of the monastery. +

Then we visited the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built by order of Peter I, where we venerated particles of the relics of Matrona of Moscow, St. Jonah and Nektarios of Kazan, St. Ephraim, and the miraculous Smolensk (Sedmiezernaya) Icon of the Mother of God, specially taken out from the altar for us. +

We also visited the Yaroslavl Wonderworkers Church, the only one that was not closed during the Soviet years. +

During the move to the Raifa Mother of God Monastery, we learned a lot of new and interesting things from Galia about Tatarstan and Tatar customs. At the monastery itself, we were met by a resident of the monastery and given a tour of the temples and the territory of the monastery. We venerated and prayed before the miraculous icons of the Mother of God “Georgian-Raifa” and “Vse Tsarina. There are also many beautiful holy images, including icons of St. Luke of Crimea and Spyridon of Trimifunt with particles of relics and vestments. We also got acquainted with the singing performing arts of the vocal quartet “Parable”. +

Then we had lunch at the monastery and went to the historical center of Kazan. In the Kazan Kremlin we visited the Annunciation Cathedral, the cathedral museum and visited the Syuyumbike tower, from the observation deck of which a beautiful view of the city opens. +

And in the evening we went on a bus tour of evening Kazan. This city left an unforgettable impression. It amazed me with its beauty, cleanliness, well-groomed conditions and beautiful roads. +

Low bow to the organizers of this trip. We are deeply touched by the attention and care of Bishop Varnava and sincerely thank him for the opportunity to visit Orthodox Kazan. Such trips are important because they help you feel your unity with your neighbor, and therefore with Christ. This trip was significant for us both spiritually and culturally. Not only seminars, conferences, and advanced training courses should unite Orthodox teachers, but also such joint pilgrimage trips that contribute to affirmation in the faith, and also help to reveal the beauty of Orthodoxy to their students. +

In a nutshell

The shrines of Orthodox Kazan are an inexhaustible source of strength for our people.

Kazan is inextricably linked with the discovery, glorification and veneration in Russia of the miraculous Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and other shrines.

To each Orthodox person Kazan and its shrines are especially dear: majestic Cathedrals, unique temples and nurseries of piety - Kazan monasteries. On the Kazan “sub-Heaven” land, miraculous icons showed Grace to the whole world, and the relics of the Holy Saints of God shone with a wondrous light.

Christians have long noticed the gracious power of prayer before miraculous icon, the special help of certain saints of God in various troubles and needs, the healing power of the springs and began to resort to them, asking for help and intercession before the Lord. Special grace descends during prayer before the holy relics and at the graves of the holy saints of God.
